Surgical Anesthesia Support Specialist

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) is recognized for having the most extensive surgical program within the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network (NSM LHIN), managing approximately 80,000 surgical procedures each year.


Anesthesia Assistants (AA) are skilled healthcare practitioners, either Registered Nurses (RNs) or Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs), who have undergone specialized training to deliver anesthetic care to stable surgical patients under the guidance and immediate availability of an anesthesiologist. This position represents an advanced role for RNs and RRTs, necessitating the completion of a postgraduate diploma in anesthesia assistance. The AA will offer both technical and clinical support to the anesthesiologist, which encompasses assistance in the block room, during inductions in the operating room, and with the Acute Pain Service. The AA's scope of practice is determined by their professional standards and the directives of the supervising anesthesiologist, who will be the designated float anesthesiologist responsible for assigning tasks and responsibilities to the AA.

Qualifications:

Education:
  • Secondary School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Current Certificate of Competence as a Registered Nurse or
  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with current registration and certification from the College of Respiratory Therapy of Ontario
  • BLS Certification obtained within the last year is essential
  • ACLS Certification is preferred
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Successful completion of an Anesthesia Assistant Graduate Certificate Program

  • Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) Management
  • Arterial Line Insertion
  • Pain Management Strategies
  • Intubation and Extubation Procedures

All applicants must possess a minimum educational requirement of Grade 12 or equivalent and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in workplace performance and attendance.

As a Regional Health Centre, RVH operates continuously to provide essential patient care, which may necessitate availability for weekday and weekend shifts, including days, evenings, and nights.
