Position Overview

Rotor Wing Captains are tasked with overseeing all facets of helicopter operations. They must demonstrate the ability to navigate diverse flying conditions, maintain composure under pressure, and exhibit flexibility and adaptability. The aircraft operated by Ornge serve as vital resources across the province, and aviation personnel may be called upon to provide flight support at various bases as operational needs dictate. All pilots at Ornge are required to complete the company's comprehensive training program and successfully obtain a Transport Canada Pilot Proficiency Check (PPC). They are accountable for adhering to all relevant policies and Standard Operating Procedures. The Second-in-Command (SIC) plays a supportive role to the Pilot-in-Command, assisting with flight planning and aircraft readiness as directed. They are responsible to the Pilot-in-Command for executing specific tasks related to the aircraft's operation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of secondary education and graduation from an accredited aviation or flight training institution;
  • Possession of a valid Air Transport Pilot's Licence (ATPL) (Helicopter) issued by Transport Canada;
  • A minimum of 2000 hours of rotary-wing flight experience;
  • At least 500 hours of experience as a Pilot-In-Command (PIC) of a multi-engine aircraft;
  • Two (2) years of experience in Instrument Flight Operations;
  • Valid Group 4 Instrument Rating;
  • Valid Class 1 Medical Certificate;
  • Experience operating multi-engine helicopters is preferred;
  • Familiarity with Night Vision Goggles (NVG) and experience in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) or similar operations is advantageous;
  • Ability to successfully complete the Controlled Goods Security Assessment Application for NVG purposes;
  • A valid Canadian Passport or eligibility to work in Canada and travel to the USA;
  • A criminal background check is mandatory for this role; and
  • Immunization records with necessary vaccinations are required for this position.

Work Hours and Location:

  • Pilots are expected to work various shifts (standard 12-hour shifts) and may be required to work overtime, including day and night shifts, as well as weekends in a 24/7 operational environment;
  • During their shifts, pilots may need to stay overnight away from their home base;
  • Successful candidates must reside or be willing to relocate within a reasonable distance to the assigned base location, ensuring compliance with the CARs rest requirements between shifts and allowing timely arrival at their assigned base when on-call;
  • Employees may be required to utilize respiratory protective equipment and must cooperate in achieving an effective fit, including maintaining a clean-shaven appearance to ensure safety.
