Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

Position Overview:
The Recreationist plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents in Memory Care. This position involves collaborating with the Terraces Recreation team to create and implement therapeutic activities tailored to the unique needs of our residents.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Terraces Recreation team to design therapeutic programs specifically for the Memory Care Floor.
- Provide coverage for departmental programs, which may include evening and weekend shifts.
- Develop and lead innovative individual and group activities based on the assessed needs of residents.
- Demonstrate flexibility and creativity in delivering spontaneous programming as resident needs arise.
- Work alongside Volunteers and staff to assess and monitor the needs of residents.
- Facilitate intergenerational programming to enrich the community experience.
- Contribute actively to the multi-disciplinary care team.
- Coordinate services effectively with other departments and staff members.
- Maintain an organized inventory of program supplies.
- Follow established infection control practices, policies, and procedures.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a 2-year College Diploma in Recreation, Activation, or a related field.
- Membership in good standing with the Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) or the Association of Professional Ontario (APO).
- Experience in planning, executing, and evaluating creative recreation programs.
- Proficient in working with frail and cognitively impaired older adults.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, effectively managing challenging situations.
- Proficiency in a second language such as Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, or Hungarian is an asset.
- Preferred certification in U-First and/or Alzheimer Society's Dementia Care Training Program (DCTP).
- Knowledge of community resources is advantageous.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Publisher.
