Position: Speech Language Pathologist

Employment Type: 1.00 FTE

Status: Vacant

Compensation: Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Nova Scotia Teachers' Provincial Agreement.

The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) plays a crucial role in supporting students, families, and educational staff in the domains of assessment, intervention, and program development for individuals facing communicative disorders and challenges in literacy, behavior, and language acquisition.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology or Communication Disorders or an equivalent qualification;
  • Eligibility for certification by the Nova Scotia College of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists;
  • Experience with Assistive Technology and early literacy development;
  • A valid driver's license in Nova Scotia.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The SLP must demonstrate the ability to work independently, collaborate effectively within a team, and adapt to diverse educational environments;
  • A comprehensive understanding of Inclusion and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is essential, as the SLP will provide assistance to educators and students across all tiers utilizing evidence-based methodologies;
  • Competency in addressing developmental articulation/phonological disorders, neurologically based speech disorders, voice and resonance disorders, fluency issues, augmentative and alternative communication, hearing impairments, and related speech-language disorders is required;
  • The SLP will actively participate in school teams, including Student Planning Teams and Teaching Support Teams, contributing through assessment provision, direct therapy, family and teacher consultations regarding student progress, language development, communication, and behavioral concerns, as well as offering professional development for school and regional staff;
  • Consideration of diversity issues, such as social dialects and biases in assessment and instructional materials, is vital in service delivery;
  • The SLP's responsibilities encompass prevention, consultation, assessment, intervention, and ongoing professional development and research.
