Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Animal Control Officer to join our team at the Humane Rescue Alliance. As a key member of our community, you will provide effective and efficient assistance to animal-related calls within the District of Columbia, ensuring the welfare and safety of both humans and animals.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Rescue domestic and wild animals from dangerous situations, and provide care and support to those in need.
  2. Collaborate with local and federal law enforcement agencies to execute search warrants, arrest warrants, and evictions as required.
  3. Interact with the public to educate them on responsible companion animal ownership and explain the provisions of the DC Animal Control Act.
  4. Provide exceptional customer service to those inquiring about HRA shelter policies and programs.
  5. Demonstrate advanced proficiency in PetPoint and other relevant software.
  6. Represent HRA in a professional and courteous manner, providing quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees.
  7. Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned by the Animal Control Manager.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge and experience in state/local animal laws and enforcement techniques.
  • Ability to handle domestic, exotic, and wild animals with care and compassion.
  • Possess and maintain a clear criminal background record and a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer service orientation, and ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to work on-call nights and weekends, and manage the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment in a positive professional manner.
  • Passion for the Humane Rescue Alliance mission, and commitment to caring for all animals and supporting the public without judgment or bias.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

The physical demands of this role include wearing a ballistic vest at all times in the field, lifting 50 pounds unassisted regularly, and being comfortable working with a variety of animals. The work environment may involve exposure to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals, hostile or irate persons, zoonotic diseases, and extreme temperatures.
