The Urban Planning and Economy Department serves as the designated Development Authority for the City of Edmonton, overseeing all land use responsibilities and decision-making for the community's benefit as mandated by the Municipal Government Act.

As a Planner in our department, your role will involve processing, evaluating, and managing applications for property rezoning, modifying statutory and non-statutory plans, and supervising the legal closure of roadways.

Your responsibilities will also include drafting reports and assembling bylaw packages for presentation to City Council.
You will interpret pertinent legislation, municipal policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practices;
Collaborate with technical stakeholders to gather and organize relevant information and data;
Utilize your planning expertise, creativity, analytical skills, and decision-making abilities to assess and resolve planning challenges while making recommendations concerning land use and public interest;
Employ your communication and writing skills to create high-quality, precise, informative, and concise technical reports for City Council.

Additionally, you will provide interpretive and educational services regarding planning and land use legislation and processes to the public and other members of the civic administration.

Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning or a related field is required;
A minimum of two (2) years of planning experience is essential.

Assets:
~ Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) or the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) is considered an asset.

A Planner 1 should possess a comprehensive understanding of municipal land use planning processes;
Strong project coordination skills are necessary due to the demanding workload and tight deadlines;
Commitment to fostering a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion.

Note:
This position may offer a hybrid work arrangement, allowing flexibility to work from both home and the office as per the agreement between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52;
