Job Title: Child and Youth Care Counsellor

We are seeking a qualified Child and Youth Care Counsellor to join our team at Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS). As a Counsellor, you will play a vital role in supporting youth facing difficult realities and providing them with the necessary tools to stabilize their housing, improve their well-being, and build life skills.

Job Summary:

The Child and Youth Care Counsellor will work collaboratively within a network of care to provide support to youth in developing skills for emotional and mental regulation. This includes creating relevant safety plans, providing wrap-around support, and resolving crises. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of trauma-informed care and be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide one-on-one supportive counselling sessions with youth to assess their needs and develop comprehensive safety plans.
  • Assess clients' presentations through conversations, observations, and psychometric tools to support client goals.
  • Maintain accurate case note documentation to CARF standards.
  • Develop and facilitate therapeutic activities with groups of young people to foster skills in hygiene, health, safety, relationships, emotional regulation, and substance use.
  • Collaborate with other team members to provide consultation and support in trauma-informed interventions.
  • Develop program materials to integrate therapeutic insights, including workbooks, workshops, and online lessons.
  • Address external referrals from other agencies and provide ongoing referral resources for long-term therapeutic support.
Requirements:
  • Child and Youth Care Counselling degree.
  • Up-to-date registration with the CYCAA or eligibility to register.
  • A minimum of 2-5 years' experience in the human services field and/or working with youth facing difficult realities.
  • Minimum of 2 years directly related experience in crisis management, de-escalation, and debrief processing, safety planning, risk assessment, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and working within a non-profit multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of the values, beliefs, and practices of Aboriginal and other cultural and diverse groups.
