The Department of Community Services (DCS) is a leading provider of social services in Nova Scotia, dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and families. Our team of professionals works collaboratively to deliver a range of programs and services, including Child and Family Wellbeing, Employment Support Services, Income Assistance, Homelessness and Supportive Housing, and Disability Support Program.

About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Social Worker to join our team in the Western Region. As a Social Worker, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of children in care, as well as those who remain in the care of their parents where concerns exist about their health and safety. You will work closely with families and communities to address challenges and trauma, and create positive change.

Primary Accountabilities
  • Assess child protection concerns and work with families and communities to address them
  • Counsel individuals and families
  • Plan and develop case plans with families
  • Work closely with community and advocate for connections to community resources
  • Participate in risk assessments, court testimonies, and evaluations
  • Plan with and supervise children in care of the Minister
  • Recruit, prepare, assess, and support foster and adoptive parents
Qualifications and Experience

A completed Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work is required, as well as a valid driver's license. You must be eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW). You are also a strong team player, empowered to impact change, compassionate, reliable, and resourceful.

Working Conditions

Most of your work involves meeting with clients in their homes or with service providers, which requires considerable driving time. You will work in a comfortable office environment with flexible working options available. On a rotating schedule, you may be required to provide child and family well-being services for your designated area, after regular business hours. This will include working on weekends and reporting to the provincial after-hours response team.
