Job Title: Peer Support Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Support Specialist to join our team at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals living with mental illness, addiction, and homelessness in the Downtown Eastside community.

Job Summary:

The Peer Support Specialist will work collaboratively with our interdisciplinary team to provide peer-specific support and guidance to clients. This includes building relationships, providing education, and advocating for clients to access health and social services. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the Downtown Eastside community and the challenges faced by individuals living with mental illness, addiction, and homelessness.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients to provide peer-specific support and guidance
  • Assist clients in accessing health and social services, including appointments and follow-up care
  • Liaise with the research team to improve clinical follow-up and client engagement
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Provide education and support to clients on their consumer rights and grievance procedures
  • Assist clients with community integration activities and escort clients to appointments as needed
Requirements:
  • Recent experience working in mental health, addiction, homelessness, and/or social services
  • Experience in a peer support training program and service planning
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a transdisciplinary team
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of primary health care and care provision by an interprofessional team
