About the Role:

The West Edmonton Mall is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sea Lion Trainer to join our team. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for the daily care and training of our California Sea Lions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement animal behavior modification techniques to ensure the well-being and safety of our sea lions.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for the sea lions, including their enclosures and surrounding areas.
  • Train and maintain presentations and interactive behaviors with the sea lions to provide an educational and entertaining experience for our guests.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of training programs to ensure compliance with industry guidelines and government regulations.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and interact with guests of all ages to promote a positive and educational experience.
  • Collaborate with other animal care staff to ensure the overall health and well-being of our sea lions.
  • Participate in public presentations and educational programs to promote conservation and awareness about marine mammals.
  • Assist with the maintenance of animal care records and reports.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in animal behavior modification and operant conditioning applied to sea lions.
  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent.
  • Thorough familiarization with modern animal husbandry techniques and operation of a CAZA or AZA facility.
  • Previous experience with public speaking, customer service, and effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software programs.
  • Ability to swim and SCUBA diver certification from an internationally recognized institution is desirable.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a permanent, full-time position requiring flexible availability for days, weekends, and holidays.
  • The wage for this position is $23.00 per hour.
  • Must be able to speak and write in English.
  • This position works in a busy mall environment primarily at attractions and in a classroom setting.
  • This individual is required to interact successfully with guests and children of all ages.
  • The position requires some city traveling to deliver educational courses.
  • Must be able to carry 50lb.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to pass a basic security clearance.
