We are working toward better health for all in our communities.
Position overview:
Through a recent Research Nova Scotia funded project, Etuaptmu’k W’loti, Tajikeimɨk, in partnership with the Aboriginal Children’s Hurt & Healing (ACHH) Initiative, is contracting a Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Clinician. Etuaptmu’k W’loti is a research program focused on improving the overall health experiences of Indigenous children and youth. Etuaptmu’k W’loti will improve the health care experiences of Mi'kmaw/Indigenous people by increasing cultural safety in education and health care settings across Nova Scotia. This work is completed through ongoing partnerships with Mi'kmaw communities and involves several research projects and knowledge translation activities.
The contracted Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Clinician will be hired for the equivalent of one (1) day per week (7.5 hours/week). Their responsibility will NOT include clinical care of any patient/person.
Their responsibility will include the following, in various capacities as part of the Executive team:
- Network with a range of provincial health authorities and organization (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) to secure support for including the post-licensure cultural safety course as a core competency for healthcare staff.
- Collaborate with post-secondary institutions across the province to engage support for the implementation of the pre-licensure cultural safety course for post-secondary students within health professions training programs.
- Work with project partners and team members to support the implementation of in-community culturally safe initiatives identified through the research project,
such as ENT clinic expansion, 2SLGBTQ transition housing, integrative health
centre.
- Assist with the review of health data, providing clinician insight into meaningful data capture points.
- Ensure all work is completed in keeping with the project team expectations and timelines.
- Attend and meaningfully contribute regular Executive/Advisory Circle meetings as required.
The chosen physician will work on a contracted basis as an independent consultant for a 1-year term, with possibility of extension (project funded until 2031).
Qualifications:
- Medical Doctor or Physician, currently licensed in Nova Scotia.
- Significant experience collaborating with Indigenous community health centres and provincial health organizations.
- Established relationships and/or experience working with post-secondary institutions across Nova Scotia.
- Experience with research and Indigenous communities and/or a willingness to learn.
- Experience in Microsoft Office programs.
- Hold a Nova Scotia driver’s license and willing to travel in Nova Scotia.
- Ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, in the Mi’kmaw language would be an asset.
What we’re looking for:
- Sound knowledge of Mi’kmaw culture and experience working with Mi’kmaw organizations.
- Sound knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls
to Action, particularly in the areas of education, health, and health care.
- Sound knowledge of the health needs of Mi’kmaw people.
- Passion, personal alignment and commitment to Mi’kmaw health and
wellness through self-determination over health resources.
- Alignment with Tajikeimik’s mission and a deep understanding of the
importance of culturally grounded practices.
Salary: to be negotiated based on experience.
Location: Nova Scotia based virtual, and able to join in-person meetings as required
Preference will be given to Mi’kmaw applicants.
