Heavy Duty Mechanic (Shop + Field Service) – Civil Construction
If you’re the Mechanic crews want on their job every time something breaks down, we’d like to talk to you
Employment: Full-Time, Permanent
Harbour Construction is looking for a skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic who can keep civil construction equipment running safely, reliably, and efficiently. This role is a blend of hands-on shop work and independent field service, supporting everything from earthmoving equipment to roadbuilding and utility installation machinery.
If you take pride in clean diagnostics, quality repairs, and helping keep major civil projects moving — you’ll fit right in.
Why Mechanics Like This Role
- A mix of shop and field work — never repetitive or boring
- Work on a wide range of heavy civil equipment (excavators, dozers, graders, loaders, etc.)
- Respect and autonomy — we know strong mechanics don’t need micromanaging
- Your expertise directly keeps crews productive and projects on schedule
- You’ll be trusted to troubleshoot, diagnose, and make the call on repairs
If you’re tired of rushed jobs, bandaid fixes, or shops that don’t value technicians — this is a better fit.
What You’ll Do
Hands-On Equipment Repair
- Diagnose and repair heavy civil construction equipment including excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, backhoes, and dump trucks
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, lubrication, and adjustments
- Rebuild or replace major components: engines, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, cylinders, final drives
- Use modern diagnostic tools for mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
- Test, calibrate, and verify equipment after repairs
Field Service Work
- Respond to breakdowns on active job sites and perform repairs independently
- Coordinate with the Fleet Manager and site supervisors on priorities
- Maintain accurate service reports, records, and parts documentation
- Plan repairs efficiently to minimize equipment downtime
Safety & Standards
- Follow Harbour Construction safety policies and safe work procedures
- Conduct hazard assessments before field work
- Keep tools, vehicles, and workspaces organized and compliant
- Report hazards, issues, or near misses promptly
Team Collaboration
- Communicate clearly with operators, foremen, and supervisors about repairs
- Mentor apprentices or junior technicians when needed
- Support continuous improvement in maintenance and field service practices
What You Bring
- 5+ years’ experience as a Heavy Duty Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Technician
- Journeyperson (Red Seal) preferred
- Strong diagnostic skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems
- Ability to work independently in both shop and field settings
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean record
- A reputation for reliability, professionalism, and quality work
If people say, “You’re the one I call when equipment really needs fixing,” you’re the type of mechanic we’re looking for.
Hours
Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Overtime, weekend work, and field service calls may be required depending on project needs.
Ready to Apply?
If you’re a Heavy Duty Mechanic who values doing the job right and being part of a team that respects your craft, we’d love to hear from you.
