Overview
Southwestern Public Health is hiring for a Dental Assistant position located at the St. Thomas site. This posting is for one current vacancy and the position is anticipated to extend until March 12, 2027, subject to availability of work and funding.
Responsibilities
- Deliver oral health programming and services as required by the Ontario Public Health Standards, associated oral health protocols and the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
- Assist with Program Assistant back-up and with designated screening and clinical preventive services at schools.
- Support community and school-based oral health screening, assessment, preventive treatment and instruction, including health promotion, disease prevention, and program evaluation and planning to promote optimal oral care for all St. Thomas, Elgin, and Oxford County residents.
- Contribute to raising awareness of oral health and its relation to overall health among residents of St. Thomas, Elgin, and Oxford County.
Education
- Successful completion of a one-year Dental Assistant Program from an accredited college
- HARP Certification required
- Current registration with the Ontario Dental Assistants Association is preferred
Knowledge & Experience
- Minimum one (1) year of on-the-job experience
- Knowledge of sterilization processes and techniques
- Experience with children is an asset
- Knowledge of Ontario Public Health Standards and related legislation
- Good command of the English language
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with clients and staff (e.g., dental hygienist)
- Ability to use computer software programs including Microsoft Office, OHISS, Dentrix, etc.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to listen, use tact and discretion, and effectively teach and present to groups about good oral hygiene
- Ability to plan, organize and manage time, and maintain required records, files and supplies
- Ability to acquire resources as needed for the job
Special Conditions
- Valid Ontario Driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
- Ability to work flexible hours when necessary
- Current CPR certificate preferred
- Must comply with the current Ontario Public Health Standards
- Ability to speak low-German is an asset
- Adherence to SWPH policies and procedures
Terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement.
Salary Range: $27.16/hr to $32.04/hr (70 hours in a two-week period).
Will receive vacation pay each pay period as well as pay in lieu of benefits following successful completion of the probationary period. Offered enrollment in the OMERS pension plan (if enrolled, in lieu benefits will reduce).
A criminal reference check completed within the last six (6) months from a Canadian Police Information Centre (CPID), inclusive of vulnerable sector screening, will be required of the successful candidate.
Immunization Requirements: Fully vaccinated against COVID-19, able to provide proof of immunization, and acknowledgement to follow Southwestern Public Health's policies and processes related to COVID-19 management in the workplace.
