About the job

You will:

- Apply deep engineering expertise to support workplace safety investigations, analyze incidents, and provide expert reports that help enforce Ontario's health and safety laws.

- Advise on and shape safety standards by contributing technical insight to legislation, codes, and best practices that protect workers across sectors.

- Lead complex engineering projects that support the province's occupational health and safety goals, from research and audits to developing new safety initiatives.

- Represent Ontario as a technical authority in court, inquests, and national committees, offering expert testimony and guidance on engineering and safety matters.

- Mentor and support colleagues by sharing knowledge, reviewing technical work, and helping build capacity across the ministry's inspection and engineering teams.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

- You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

- This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class “G” driver's license or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof of a valid driver's license at the time of hire.

Technical Expertise in Structural Engineering

- Demonstrated knowledge and application of structural engineering theories and practices including forensic analysis, risk assessment, and compliance with OH&S legislation.

- Knowledge of standards, guidelines, codes, other criteria, and sound engineering practice related to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

- Ability to conduct complex inspections, investigations, and audits across sectors (e.g., industrial, mining, construction) and provide authoritative engineering reports and expert testimony.

- Experience with relevant computer software to produce engineering reports, complete calculations and drawings, perform analysis and draft a variety of materials.

Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Regulatory Knowledge and Application

- Understanding of the OH&S Act, regulations, standards, and codes, and their application in diverse workplace settings.

- Ability to develop, interpret, and enforce compliance standards, and provide strategic advice on engineering deficiencies and public safety risks.

Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

- Proven ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences, including legal counsel, senior management, and external stakeholders.

- Ability to represent the ministry as an expert witness, on national committees, and in public forums, with strong advocacy and negotiation skills.

Project and Quality Assurance Leadership

- Experience leading large-scale engineering projects, including planning, budgeting, and overseeing technical work aligned with ministry mandates.

- Ability to assess and ensure quality and compliance of engineering work by external consultants through audits and certifications.

Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving

- Demonstrated conceptual reasoning and investigative skills to identify root causes of incidents, assess engineering risks, and recommend defensible solutions.

- Ability to conduct strategic research, monitor trends, and contribute to the development of new or revised standards and policies.

- Encadrer et soutenir les collègues en faisant part de vos connaissances, en examinant les travaux techniques et en aidant à renforcer les capacités des équipes d'inspection et d'ingénierie du Ministère.

Ce que vous apportez à l'équipe

Ce qui est obligatoire :

- Vous êtes un ingénieur, titulaire d'une licence délivrée par l'Ordre des ingénieurs de l'Ontario.

- Le poste exige que la personne retenue possède un permis de conduire valide de catégorie “G” ou l'équivalent reconnu par la province de l'Ontario. L'offre d'emploi est conditionnelle. La personne retenue doit fournir la preuve de son permis de conduire valide au moment de son embauche.

Expertise technique en génie structures

- Connaissance et application démontrées des théories et des pratiques de génie structures, y compris l'analyse judiciaire, l'évaluation des risques et la conformité à la législation sur la santé et la sécurité.

- Connaissance des normes, des lignes directrices, des codes, d'autres critères et des saines pratiques d'ingénierie liées à la Loi sur la santé et la sécurité au travail.

- Capacité d'effectuer des inspections, des enquêtes et des vérifications complexes dans tous les secteurs (p. ex., industrie, mines, construction) et de fournir des rapports d'ingénierie et des témoignages d'experts faisant autorité.

- Expérience avec les logiciels pertinents pour produire des rapports d'ingénierie, effectuer des calculs et des dessins, effectuer des analyses et rédiger une variété de documents.

Connaissance et application de la réglementation en matière de santé et de sécurité au travail

- Compréhension de la Loi, des règlements, des normes et des codes en matière de santé et de sécurité au travail, et de leur application dans divers milieux de travail.

- Capacité d'élaborer, d'interpréter et d'appliquer des normes de conformité, et de fournir des conseils stratégiques sur les lacunes techniques et les risques pour la sécurité publique.

Communication et mobilisation auprès des intervenants

- Capacité avérée de communiquer clairement des renseignements techniques complexes à divers publics, y compris les conseillers juridiques, la haute direction et les intervenants externes.

- Capacité de représenter le ministère à titre d'expert, au sein de comités nationaux et de forums publics, avec de solides compétences en matière de défense des intérêts et de négociation.

Leadership de projet et en assurance de la qualité

- Expérience de la direction de projets d'ingénierie à grande échelle, y compris la planification, la budgétisation et la supervision de travaux techniques conformes aux mandats du ministère.

- Capacité d'évaluer et d'assurer la qualité et la conformité des travaux d'ingénierie effectués par des consultants externes au moyen de vérifications et de certifications.

Compétences en réflexion analytique et résolution de problèmes

- Compétences en raisonnement conceptuel et en matière d'enquête démontrées pour cerner les causes profondes des incidents, évaluer les risques techniques et recommander des solutions défendables.

- Capacité d'effectuer des recherches stratégiques, de surveiller les tendances et de contribuer à l'élaboration de normes et de politiques nouvelles ou révisées.
