Position Summary
The Family Preservation Worker – Prevention will provide hands‑on, in‑home support, education, and early intervention services to families. The goal of this position is to strengthen family functioning, ensure child safety, and promote family reunification or preservation in accordance with Sandy Bay Child and Family Services Inc. (SBCFS) policies and legislation governing child and family services in Manitoba and An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families (Canada).
Some Duties Include
- Develop program framework, brochures, and necessary intake forms for service delivery.
- Collaborate with community resources to provide wrap around supports and services to clientele.
- Ensuring the safety and well‑being of children and youth while helping to preserve or reunify the family unit.
- Attend meetings as requested by the Prevention Supervisor and Customary Care Supervisor to coordinate case planning.
- Provide early intervention, prevention, and family support services to enhance family functioning.
- Receive referrals from Customary Care Supervisors and self‑referrals from community.
- Identify needs of the community, coordinate appropriate supports and cultural services to clientele.
- Conduct family assessments to identify strengths, needs, and risks for the purpose of maintaining or reunifying children with their families.
- Provide advocacy and support for Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation families involved in child welfare processes or court proceedings.
- May facilitate and supervise family visits and transportation between children, parents, and extended family members to maintain cultural and relational connections.
- Plan and will ensure families have signed up for prevention and culturally focused workshops, presentations, and training.
- Support family relationship wellness through education, referral, and access to counseling or other intervention services (e.g., conflict resolution, intimate partner violence prevention).
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues in Indigenous rural and urban conditions.
- Strong working knowledge of Child Welfare legislation, policies, services and programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Completion of bachelor’s degree in social work or a degree in a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of social work experience and experience working with First Nation’s families.
- Demonstrated reliability and strong work history.
- Valid Manitoba Driver’s Licence with access to a vehicle; willing to travel as needed.
- Ability to provide a current Driver’s Abstract.
- Successful completion of Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry Check.
- Ability to speak and/or understand the Ojibway language is considered an asset.
- Knowledge and respect for Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation’s culture, traditions, and philosophy.
