Public Private Partnerships Lead the Way

E nvision a world where cities are so densely populated that workers spend hours commuting to and from work every day. The resulting lack of productivity, frustration, infrastructure damage, emissions, and mobility impairment could significantly impact the community’s quality of life and lead to economic and social stagnation. This scenario is not a distant future but a pressing reality that demands immediate attention.

People are flocking to urban areas in unprecedented numbers worldwide. The United Nations marked a significant shift in 2007 when the urban population surpassed the rural. Today, over half of the world’s population, a staggering 4.4 billion people, reside in urban areas. And this trend is only accelerating, presenting an enormous urban mobility challenge.

Without sound urban mobility planning, major cities’ livability will likely be unsustainable. This will result in a diminished quality of life, higher cost of living, low workplace productivity, and stress on an aging transportation infrastructure network.

The cost of traffic gridlock in urban settings presents a significant opportunity for parking organizations. Redeveloping aging parking facilities is a pivotal chance to shape cities’ livability and meet the demands of today’s society.

Transit-oriented, smart redevelopment of parking structures, facilitated by public-private partnerships, has the potential to revolutionize urban mobility. By supporting a network of mobility options, these partnerships can significantly enhance connectivity in dense urban settings in the face of extraordinary urban growth.

By embracing public-private partnership agreements, parking organizations can free up finite financial resources to reallocate to other pressing needs while delivering new, state-of-the-art infrastructure for the betterment of the public they serve.

The formulation of initial design guidelines for vertiport development to support the safe integration of Advance Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft presents an innovative opportunity for parking organizations. Supporting the infrastructure to safely deploy electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft as an urban air mobility option could reduce traffic congestion. Due to several variables, some industry experts believe that rooftop vertiports are more feasible than at-grade options.

Implementing stringent design standards, which would require modifications to the building and fire codes, land-use analyses, and specialized construction requirements, presents a significant challenge; however, this opportunity deserves to be considered to support more livable communities.

Forward thinkers have been proactive in addressing the challenges of urban mobility over time. They represent the vision of the future by embracing innovative approaches that will cement the livability of future generations and advance the parking industry’s legacy. ◆
