Plumber positions vary in tasks and responsibilities. Typically, they maintain, commission, monitor, troubleshoot, analyze performance and repair mechanical equipment and systems. Plumbers plan, assemble, install, inspect, repair and service pipes, tubing, fittings, valves, controls, fixtures and related components used for gas, air, medical gas, water and waste distribution and disposal systems.

As part of their role, plumbers provide recommendations on how to design mechanical and plumbing systems for new projects, as well as on replacing, modifying and major repairs to existing systems. They complete preventative maintenance, which includes checking and recording new equipment, as well as testing and servicing existing equipment and preparing maintenance schedules. Plumbers make detailed sketches for pipe and equipment fabrication and installation. They also measure, cut, thread, groove, bend assemble and install metal, plastic and fiberglass pipes, valves and fittings. In addition, they select the type and size of pipe required and measure, cut, thread, bend clamp, solvent cement or solder pipe. Plumbers study the building plans and specifications to determine the layout for the plumbing and the type of pipe and tools to use; and assemble and install valves and fittings.

Plumbers ensure adequate material and parts are on hand. They will also assign work and train non-journeyman workers assigned to assist with projects.

Plumbers work in a number of different facilities including hospitals, medical centers and specialty institutions. They work closely with other trades people such as machinists, instrument mechanics, welders and electricians. Plumbers may work full-time or part-time hours. Shift schedules may include a combination of day, evening and weekend shifts.

Plumbers spend the majority of the day standing, walking, bending and lifting of heavy equipment and supplies. Plumbers may be required to lift and move items that weigh over 20 kilograms.
