Fredericton, Canada University of Victoria Full time

Overview

Associate Professor in Greek literature and culture (Preferential hire)

Start date: July 1, 2026

We acknowledge and respect the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the university stands, and the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

The Department of Greek and Roman Studies occupies a unique position at the University of Victoria and within British Columbia. As is the case with most departments focused on the Classical world, we are intrinsically interdisciplinary, covering the fields of literature, history, and archaeology. Yet within British Columbia, we are the only academic department at a major research university devoted solely to the Greek and Roman worlds widely conceived. Our teaching and research cover a vast range of cultural, temporal, and chronological areas, from the prehistoric periods to the Late Antique, from Spain to the Middle East and beyond.

The Department invites applications from talented scholars for a position at the rank of Associate Professor (with tenure or with eligibility for tenure) to commence July 1, 2026.

Requirements

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have a PhD in Greek and Roman Studies or Classics focused on Greek language and literature. We are especially interested in specializations that engage with a range of disciplines, including fields of environmental studies, health and science, material culture, gender, colonialism, as well as reception studies.

- Demonstration of outstanding teaching abilities evidenced by data, testimonials and other forms of documentation related to teaching large lecture courses in myth and related areas of Greek and Roman culture.

In accordance with the University's equity plan and pursuant to Section 42 of the Human Rights code of the Province of British Columbia, we are seeking to make a preferential hire addressing gender imbalance within the Department; as such, applications from women will be given priority, although we encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; if you are neither a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, please indicate if you are authorized to work in Canada, and be prepared to provide a copy of your permit authorizing same.

Equity statement

UVic is committed to upholding the values of equity, diversity, inclusion and human rights in our living, learning and work environments. In pursuit of our values, we seek members who are eager to actively participate in that shared responsibility. We actively encourage applications from historically and systemically marginalized groups and in particular we are seeking for this preferential search candidates who are women.
