**Salary**: Wage Grade 5 - Step 4 $25.79/hr (CUPE 2998)

Benefits: Mandatory benefits only

Hours: 8:00 am to 4:30pm. Some evenings and weekends. 40 hours per week

Accountability: Executive Director

Function: The Caretaker is responsible for the overall stewardship of the building, performing a comprehensive range of custodial and maintenance tasks for both the interior and exterior. This position plays a key role in maintaining a safe, clean, and functional environment, contributing to the organization’s overall success.

Status: Permanent Full Time

**PURPOSE & MANDATE**:
Community Centre 55, otherwise known as Centre 55, is an agency of the City of Toronto and a registered charity serving the Beaches-East York community since 1975. Centre 55 offers a variety of adult educational and recreational programs and is a multi-site licensed child care provider serving the needs of families with children ages 18 months to 13 years.

Centre 55 also runs a very popular summer camp program for children aged 5 to 12 years old; it is the lead organizer of the Beaches Santa Claus Parade; and has a long-standing Share A Christmas program, which donates grocery gift cards and unwrapped toys to local families in need.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Maintain a clean, healthy, and safe environment within the Centre
- Maintain the external property of the building, including removing litter, watering planters, leaf, snow, and ice removal
- Cleaning/disinfection of the Centre, including the washrooms (restocking supplies when needed), all common areas, program rooms, and basement
- Ensure that the building’s mechanical and electrical systems are operating effectively
- Monitor and perform general maintenance and repairs of appliances, equipment and building fixtures (i.e. paint touch-ups, maintaining light fixtures, and basic plumbing)
- Keep the building secure by opening and closing according to general operating hours, or special needs as required
- Coordinate garbage and recycling bins for weekly curb side pickup
- Carry out minor repairs to the building and its equipment as directed
- Set up, move, or take down furniture in program rooms, as required
- In coordination with the Office Manager, facilitate repairs and work with external resources/contractors
- Load/unload supplies and replenish inventory, working closely with Office Manager to coordinate purchases
- Responsible to maintain and keep an orderly custodial workspace
- Maintain a “green” or environmentally sensitive approach
- Perform other duties, as required

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- 5+ years of previous experience in, janitorial work, facility maintenance, or a related field in an industrial or commercial environment
- Working knowledge of and experience with materials, basic plumbing, basic electrical, furniture, heating, fire extinguishers, and alarms
- Sound understanding and working knowledge of hand and power tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, impact drills, etc.)
- Working knowledge of personal and public safety systems and practices, including safety regulations, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), lifting techniques, materials handling, and working from ladders
- Able to understand WHMIS and safety regulations, and perform tasks in a safe manner
- Able to lift, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, move equipment, and climb ladders on a regular basis
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to function effectively with supervisors, staff, program participants, volunteers, and user groups
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced work environment.
- Must be available to work nights/weekends/overtime/on call duty, when required
- Excellent communications, organizational, and time management skills
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 60 pounds
- Ability to work with mínimal supervision
- Pass a Vulnerable Sector Police Background Check
