Job Summary
Working with Science Advising, a unit that is a central hub for instructors, departments and students in navigating student-related policy, process and practice, the Business Analyst leads the assessment of faculty needs and is responsible for aligning business requirements with information technology solutions.
The Business Analyst will provide expertise in the areas of requirements definition, business process analysis and design, functional design, configuration, implementation, reporting, testing, training and documentation to deliver solutions for the Faculty of Science, with a focus on data analysis and delivery. In particular, this position provides expertise to plan and implement Workday Student, the incoming student information system under the Integrated Renewal Program (IRP), and is a key team member in devising workflows and processes to ensure continuity of service for the unit.
The majority of work will be performed in strong collaboration with key stakeholders including Science Advising and Faculty of Science departments. Projects typically have a high degree of complexity, influence, and impact as solutions must work for a variety of stakeholders in the Faculty and these solutions ultimately impact the student experience.

The Business Analyst reports to the Assistant Dean, Students in the Faculty of Science
- Works daily with a project team including a project manager, functional experts, and other project specialists
- Works closely with a broad range of stakeholders, including management and staff of UBC Faculty of Science, faculty and staff within the science departments, and other colleagues from other administrative and academic units.
Work Performed
Specific Duties:
- Ensures solutions are consistent with the overall technical and business architecture of the university and complies with UBC IT and university policies, as well as governmental legislation and other external entities compliancy requirements on security, privacy, and accessibility.
- Profile and convert data using a variety of resources, including spreadsheets, reports. Manipulation of large volumes of data for the purpose of operational analysis.
- Lead stakeholder requirements gathering and review sessions and obtain sign-offs as required.
- Acquire and maintain a working knowledge of the university’s technical and business environment.
- Understands key technical environments to effectively identify integration, security, scalability, and performance requirements.
- Build and maintain good working relationships with project teams, colleagues, and stakeholders.

- Leads the assessment of Faculty of Science needs utilizing a structured requirements process (gathering, analyzing, documenting, and managing changes) to identify business priorities and recommends options.
- Identifies, elicits, and documents business requirements, defines business rules and communicates requirements for the implementation of business solutions.
- Leads short-term planning sessions to implement integrated business process improvements and documents discussion and agreements.
- Provides consultative services for the development of policies and procedures.
- Analyzes metrics to ensure fit and stakeholder satisfaction.
- Provides input to feasibility studies for standard development projects and enhancements.
- Provides technical guidance and leadership to less-experienced individuals. Prepares functional, system and program specifications.
