Toronto, Canada OCAD University Full time

OCAD University acknowledges the ancestral territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabeg and the Huron-Wendat, who are the original owners and custodians of the land on which we work, stand and create._

OCAD University, Canada’s largest and oldest art and design university, is a vibrant community of bold, curious and compassionate artists, designers and scholars who are imagining and creating a joyful, equitable and sustainable world. The University is an internationally renowned hub for art, design, digital media, research, innovation and creativity, and arts administration. It embraces collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches to change-making through art, design-thinking curriculum and research, making OCAD U a local, regional, national and global leader in art and design.

It is an exciting time to join the OCAD U community. The University is at a key stage in its institutional transformation, with the implementation of its Academic and Strategic Plan and guiding principles—driving positive impact, decolonization, indigenization, and equity, environmental sustainability, emerging as a vibrant hub, student-centered approaches, innovation in learning, teaching, and research, and financial stewardship.

**Project Details**:
Conducting research toward the writing of a SSHRC Connections Grant proposing an international conference, hosted at OCAD University, that situates Frankfurt School critical theory in a contemporary, global context. Conference proceedings will contribute to a proposed _Oxford Handbook of Frankfurt School Critical Theory_, currently under review by the editorial board of Oxford University Press.

Associated with the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, Germany, the Frankfurt School is now one hundred years old, having been first established in 1923. The Frankfurt School is credited with coining the phrase “critical theory” in the 1930’s. Work associated with the Frankfurt School is taken up around the world because of the contemporary relevance of its core concern: liberation from domination. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Frankfurt School scholarship and research in English does not reflect this global interest. Major academic presses and conferences tend to disseminate work that adheres to Eurocentric and Anglo-American paradigms, strangely isolating Frankfurt School theory from the multiple streams of contemporary and historical critical theory emerging across cultural contexts. Ultimately, this presents a constrained view of the Frankfurt School.

This research project will identify how contemporary scholars around the world use concepts initiated by Frankfurt School to inform critical discourse about race, gender, culture, identity, class, ability, ecology, colonialism and decolonization within a global framework. Tracing how these concepts shift and are altered as they enter new spatial, temporal and cultural contexts, the conference and Handbook will also consider what the Frankfurt School theorists may not have foreseen about our contemporary world, and how other critical approaches might be necessary supplements to their positions.
