**ABOUT POSITION**:
Reporting to the Director of Homelessness Prevention and Shelter Services, the Indigenous Outreach Worker joins a multi-faceted team working in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Beacon Community Services that make a difference in people’s lives every day. Supporting youth aged 15-27, this position focuses on each youth’s unique strengths and supports them to obtain housing, employment, education, training, and life-skills, as well as to positively address substance use, mental health, and physical health issues, or anything else youth feel they need support with. This position will work Monday-Friday 9-5, however flexibility in scheduling is required to meet the program needs.

**PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Implement care-plans and intervention strategies using a variety of techniques and cultural practices.
- Provide one-on-one informal counselling and mediation as required.
- Create a safe space for all youth and staff by responding to behaviors and situations through a trauma informed lens, modelling respectful behavior.
- Demonstrate commitment to the team as a positive, active participant who treats others in a respectful and supportive manner.
- Establish and maintain a network of positive working relationships with other Beacon youth programs and other Indigenous and community programs/resources.
- Maintain appropriate statistical records, logs, case files, and client reports.
- Organize and help facilitate culturally relevant workshops and activities, leading programming and collaborating with Elders, Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous community resources.
- Positively and proactively address any concerns, incidents, or crises which affect youth.
- Monitor, locate, and identify, individuals that need support in accessing services

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPEREINCE**
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working with homelessness and marginalized groups of individuals in a direct support role.
- Experience working with the Indigenous community.
- Experience working with local community organizations and resources.
- Understanding of issues related to mental health needs and addictions.
- First Aid
- Naloxone training
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**:

- Knowledge and understanding of the family and social issues that Indigenous youth face today, including the generational impacts of the residential school system on families and communities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to problem solve, work independently as well as part of a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Positive and professional attitude
- Ability to use sound judgement while working in demanding conditions and circumstances
- Must demonstrate a good working knowledge of community resources in Victoria, particularly youth & Indigenous-specific resources.
- Solid understanding of social issues such as poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, addictions, mental health and other challenges faced by Indigenous populations.
- Ability to adapt to unique preventative approach model which increases access to health and community services, promotes safety and addresses dynamic barriers and complexities faced by community members identified within the underserved populations
