**Position Summary**:
School Communities

Supporting the needs of Indigenous students and families through the Indigenous Rights and Education Team

The Safe and Inclusive Schools Team including The H.O.P.E.S team (for students who have been suspended for 6 or more days or expelled)

The Welcome Centre (for newcomers, refugees, and international students)

HDSB Social Workers are capable of providing short-term individual and/or group counseling as well as support to parents and families. They provide comprehensive support and case management and are knowledgeable of local and regional community resources. HDSB Social Workers have knowledge related to bullying prevention and intervention, including training in restorative practices and conflict resolution strategies.

**Responsibilities may include**:
Provide social work services to Indigenous students and families

Offer problem-solving and consultation services around student needs to develop supportive strategies to enhance student success

Provide support and service rooted in, cultural responsiveness, anti-colonial approaches, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive practices

Help students, families and schools in relation to mental health, emotional, social and behavioral concerns

Support students who are suspended or expelled, and their families

Provide anger management, social skills, conflict resolution, life skills, and work skills

Provide social work services to newcomers, refugees and international students and their families during students' transition to school

Support schools and communities around issues of bullying prevention/intervention and other issues related to school safety including Violence Threat Risk Assessment and Restorative Practices

**Minimum Qualifications**:
? Master’s Degree in Social Work

? Member in good standing of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers

? Strong verbal and written communication skills

? Access to reliable transportation

**Preferred Qualifications**:
Experience working in a school board setting

Experience working with students, parents, educators and other school-based staff, police and community partners, including students at risk

Experience supporting individuals from a variety of lived experiences (socio-economic, cultural, etc.,)

Lived experience as a member of a marginalized group

Experience with crisis management support

In recognition of the Indigenous Education Grant Requirements and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, this role is focused on serving the self-identified needs of Indigenous students and their families

Demonstrated knowledge of service delivery approaches rooted in anti-colonial practices, supporting identity intersectionalities, and anti-racistpractices that nurture safe(r) spaces, cultural humility and inclusivity.

Demonstrated knowledge and use of anti-colonial, anti-racist and decolonizing frameworks in their work

Strong awareness of, and established relationships with, services geared to persons who self identify as Indigenous in Ontario.

3-5 years demonstrated experience in working with or within the public school system with students, parents, educators and community partners to promote inclusive and representative support for Indigenous students and their familiesDemonstrated experience in developing successful collaborations both within the Board and with the wider community.
