**Probationary Firefighter (5**th** Class)**

**This MPFFA union position offers a starting hourly wage rate of $30.06, based on a 42-hour work week. Currently in a trial for a 24-hour shift schedule based on a 28-day cycle.**

**Position **S**ummary**:
A Probationary Firefighter, working under the supervision of Officers, is responsible for working as part of a professional team; operating and maintaining firefighting apparatus, equipment, and fire stations; combating fires; performing rescue work; administering designated emergency medical procedures/aid; inspecting properties and equipment for fire hazards; participating in public education programs and continually upgrading skills, knowledge and physical requirements to current standards.

**Duties & Responsibilities**:
The Fire Department provides 24-hour a day, 7 days a week fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical assist services to the community. Firefighters are also involved in fire prevention, public fire safety education, fire apparatus and equipment maintenance, and fire station maintenance activities. Firefighters at the Town of Midland work shifts which necessitates working nights, through weekends and on holidays.
- As assigned, conducts firefighting/rescue activities at emergency scenes.
- Responds promptly and efficiently to alarms, obey the orders of the officer in charge, share in the work that is required at emergency scenes, around the fire stations and when otherwise on duty.
- Ability to demonstrate independence of judgement and action in circumstances of extreme emergency where referral to a superior for instruction is not possible.
- Assists and participates with in-service training as required through the Training Division, firefighting and rescue operations when responding to an emergency, and investigation and determining the cause of fires.
- As a shift member, assists with maintenance and custodial duties as required at the station.
- Assists with maintenance and testing of all vehicles and apparatus assigned to the shift, including but not limited to, salvage operations during and following any emergency, cleaning, checking replacement and readying of apparatus and equipment, and the daily operation of station and grounds to ensure proper order and condition.
- Completes routine duties in the maintenance of firefighting/rescue equipment and fire department property, carrying out of specific orders and directions as received from a superior officer in the normal course of maintenance duties and firefighting.
- Conducts and assists with fire department pre-planning as well as with Residential Home Inspections within the municipality as required.
- Ensures compliance with all Health and Safety matters in accordance with the Corporation of the Town of Midland's Health and Safety Manual and the Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulations. Ensures the Occupational Health and Safety procedures are strictly adhered to.
- Ensures the safe operation of all department equipment, fire station and other properties related to the daily operation of the department.
- Inspects property at the scene of a fire to prevent re-ignition.
- Performs such duties as required to further advance Public Information, Public Safety and Public Relations within the department, various maintenance tasks on apparatus and equipment.
- Reports directly to the shift Captain regarding activities within the department; the Fire Prevention Division on all observed fire/life safety matters.
- Responds with and has full care of firefighting/rescue apparatus to and from the scene of an emergency as both driver and pump operator.
- Responsible for rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable hazard.
- Responsible for the saving of life and property through the suppression and prevention of fires and by providing emergency and rescue services.
- Accepts and understands the responsibility of being a firefighter and shall perform to the best of their ability the duties assigned.
- Conducts themselves in a professional, compassionate, and sensitive manner, including refraining from using offensive statements or language at the emergency scene, in and around the fire stations and when on duty in public.
- Responsible for rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditions, frequently involving considerable risk.
- Strong commitment to continuous training in fire suppression, prevention, and emergency aid procedures.
