**Working for the Department**

The Vice Provost and Dean of Students (DoS) is responsible for providing a number of specialized support services that help students achieve success and reach their academic potential. The Dean of Students’ supports all students on the university’s numerous campuses and so must employ creative strategies to meet the diverse needs of a large student population.

**Position**

Reporting to the Manager and working collaboratively with the Student Life Team in the Office of the Dean of Students, the Student Conduct Officer is jointly responsible for making decisions under the student Conduct Policy (SCP) and the Student Academic Integrity Policy (SAIP) in accordance with the goal of maintaining the safety and integrity of the University Community.

Mandated by GFC policy, the SCA ensures that violations of the above policies are appropriately investigated and sanctioned when warranted for all University of Alberta campuses. Addressing highly visible and sensitive matters, the SCA must balance the safety of the community with the goal of student development and learning. A substantial component of SCA’s role is to mitigate, manage and prevent significant risks to the University’s reputation, as well as the risk of judicial review of discipline decisions and other civil litigation against the University.

SCA also works with the Student Life Team to provide needs-based, complainant driven non-disciplinary accountability options, such as restorative practices, voluntary educational measures, and other facilitated alternatives to policy complaints.

**Duties**
- Investigate and make discipline decisions under the SCP and SAIP
- Meet with complainants, accused students, advisors and lawyers, witnesses and victims of policy violations
- Be able to adhere to and clearly explain University processes when criminal lawyers and other external advisors become involved
- Receive procedural and legal requests and make decisions on process
- Maintain the integrity of the University’s processes when criminal or other processes occur simultaneously
- Generate independent, arm’s length discipline decisions, including written summary of allegations, description of investigation, decision on whether the student was responsible for the offence(s) as charged, and impose appropriate sanction(s) in accordance with policies, including reasons, based on the requirements of administrative law
- Ensure procedural fairness and transparency to reduce the risk of litigation, judicial review, and reputational risk
- Provide advice and guidance to Associate Deans, Directors and other members of the University Community regarding discipline cases Connect students to on-campus resources, including the Office of the Student Ombuds, the Sexual Assault Centre, Helping Individuals At Risk (HIAR) and Counseling and Clinical Services
- Maintain confidentiality according to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPP) Act, balanced with the often competing requirements of procedural fairness under Administrative Law
- Working closely with the Student Life team, identify and provide opportunities for non-disciplinary accountability when a Code complaint is unsuitable, undesirable, or does not address the needs of the complainant
- Design process according to the needs of the person(s) harmed, potential for positive resolution, and team capacity
