**Position Summary**
The Nursing Extern provides person-centered personal care to residents to promote the comfort, safety, and quality of life of Finlandia Nursing Home/Finlandia Village residents.
Under the direction of the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)and/or the Registered Nurse (RN) the Nursing Extern demonstrates competency by using acquired knowledge and skills to make appropriate clinical decisions in the provision of care to residents' The Nursing Extern is responsible to ensure that the standards of care align with the vision, mission and performance standards of Finlandia Nursing Home as well as all relevant federal and provincial regulations including accreditation standards.
**Some Key Responsibilities**
- The Nursing Extern will perform within the full scope of practice as prescribed in accordance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021
- Ensures the provision of quality nursing care through in-service education, supervision and adherence to the Quality Improvement (QI)/Risk Management Program
- Practices under direct or indirect supervision of the RPN or RN when the resident’s condition is common enough that the outcome is predictable
- Updates care plans that include a limited range of interventions (i.e. established procedures)
- Ensures that resident care plans and documentation reflect care being provided
- Seeks collaboration from the RPN and/or RN in situations that are beyond the scope of the Extern, when resident outcomes are not predictable
- Communicates with the resident to confirm validity of statements and assesses resident needs, with the other members of the interdisciplinary team. Is receptive to concerns expressed and conveys information appropriately
- Systematically and accurately collects and documents information regarding the individual resident’s physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs
- Safely and effectively performs the strategies and interventions directed by the care plan. Assists with the goal of obtaining or maintaining the optimal level of functioning for each resident and provides direct resident care as required
- Evaluates the effectiveness of individual resident care. Contributes to care plan updates for each resident
- Documents observations, procedures, interventions, and medications on the individualized plans of care, as soon as possible, without compromising resident care and safety
- Demonstrates safety consciousness by maintaining a clean and safe work environment, practicing good body mechanics and lifting/transfer techniques. Recognizes safety hazards and takes appropriate actions. Participates in fire drills and emergency measures practice and adheres to Infection Control policies and procedures
- Performs other duties as assigned
**Medications/Treatments**:
- Administers medications and carries out treatments in accordance with The Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021. O. Reg. 178/24, s. 13 (iii) a nursing student extern who has received training in the administration of drugs in accordance with written policies and protocols developed under subsection 123 (2), who, in the reasonable opinion of the licensee, has the appropriate skills, knowledge and experience to administer drugs in a long-term care home and who has been assigned to perform the administration by a member of the registered nursing staff of the long-term care home and is under the supervision of that member in accordance with any practice standards and guidelines issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario. The College of Nurses of Ontario standards, policies, procedures, and standards established by the nursing home in quality assurance (QI) program
- Maintains safe storage of all prescribed medications and solutions
**Leadership**:
- Demonstrates effective leadership abilities and promotes teamwork amongst all disciplines
- Supports and actively participates care conferences, home area meetings, staff meetings, facility in-service programs, and ongoing education
- Identifies and reports to the RPN or RN unacceptable practice and/or behaviour of staff during the performance of duties, at the time it occurs
**Qualifications**
- Two years of Bachelor of Science in Nursing or;
- One year of Practical Nursing Program and;
- Nursing Program: 1 year (required)
- Finnish speaking skill is considered an asset
- An acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check verified within the past six months
- 2-step TB test within the past six months
**Physical Demands**
- Standing, walking, working at a computer workstation.
