**Primary function**:
This position is responsible for providing client service under the direct supervision of the Manager, Legal Services.

The legal aid worker would be required to assist the family and criminal duty counsel office by providing direct client service and administrative support, including client and surety interviews, assisting in preparing for bail hearings, triaging client needs and referring clients to appropriate services and resources. The position may include speaking to matters in court or making minor court appearances as required.

Reporting to: Manager, Legal Services

**Key accountabilities**:

- Liaise with other legal service providers, internal and external, including court-based services, to ensure seamless client service.
- Perform client and certificate management activities, including providing of information to clients relating to legal aid and the courts.
- Assign counsel to Ontario Review Board and Consent and Capacity Board matters for client representation as requested.
- Support LAO’s Panel Management program.
- Support the eligibility review process, including making entitlement decisions based on LAO’s financial eligibility and policy criteria and preparation of resumes for the Eligibility Review Office.
- Review, interrupt and summarize financial statements and tax assessments
- Create systems to manage the volume of work and the ability to compile information for statistical purposes and reporting/analysis.
- Prepare contribution agreements, certificates, forms and general correspondences.
- Review, summarize and respond to client complaints.
- Greet and assist clients and lawyers on the phone and/or in person.
- Provide back-up or vacation relief for other staff.
- Perform other duties as required.

**Required skills & experience**:

- Ability to investigate and complete detailed and difficult financial assessments for self-employed and high risk files.
- Ability to read, understand and summarize individual and business financial statements, tax returns and assessments.
- Well-developed interview and investigative skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for dealing with clients, lawyers and other agencies with the proven ability to exercise judgment when encountering stressful situations including the early identification of vulnerable clients so that the appropriate service and referrals can be made.
- Proven ability to learn and adapt to new or modified policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated commitment to client service and relationship building skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- Possess significant knowledge of LAO priorities, policies and procedures.
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including familiarity and competence with proper maintenance of client data base, computer information databases such as PeopleSoft
- Ability to determine legal and financial eligibility based on LAO eligibility criteria and to generate certificates in accordance with office procedures and standard formats and to submit files and appropriate documentation to area office staff for processing.
