Installs, repairs, and replaces signs on regional roadways, facilities, and for capital projects and transit services. Performs snow plowing, ice control, and general winter maintenance on roads, bridges, and roadsides, as needed.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Installs and maintains traffic signs for regional roads and transit (e.g., transit routes/schedules, road closures, construction, detours), and specialty signs at corporate facilities.
- Installs sign posts, special support systems, barricades, and road barriers.
- Determines appropriate locations to install permanent and temporary signs based on/with consideration to traffic engineering plans, roadway regulations, design, alignment, sightlines, space availability, locate information, traffic volume, speed, driver safety, and understandability. Liaises with lead hand to determine utility service locations prior to installations.
- Performs regular and annual inspections to check signs for reflectivity, proper placement, sheeting condition, visibility, and damage. Repairs signs and creates work orders using mobile technology. Submits orders to sign shop using online system.
- Performs annual in-the-field sign inventory.
- Operates sign truck, hydraulic crane, material handling device, high pressure hydraulic hoses, and hammer drill. Maintains sign inventory. Loads/unloads equipment and materials. Uses reciprocating saws and other equipment to cut posts and remove signs. Removes branches covering signs as required.
- Operates trucks and ancillary equipment for snow plowing, salting, and sanding operations, including wheel loader. Uses hand tools to remove snow/ice from roadsides and drainage areas. Performs other roads maintenance activities (e.g., snow fences, patching). Uses oxygen-acetylene torches to cut metal components (e.g., bolts) when changing plow blades.
- Sets up traffic protection plans per the Ontario Traffic Manual.
- Responds to emergency road closure requests from police, fire, and utilities via corporate call centre, and discusses sign installation, emergencies, and road closures with same.
- Discusses work plans/requirements and operational issues (e.g., detours, road closures) with other divisional staff (e.g., engineering, sign shop). Has contact with transit staff regarding route changes.
- Obtains materials from corporate stores. Has signing authority and a p-card for materials, supplies.
- Maintains sign repair shop, storage area, tools, equipment, and vehicles in good, safe working condition per policies and standards, and reports damage and safety issues to lead hand/supervisor immediately; discusses equipment repair with fleet management staff. Checks high pressure hydraulic hoses and tools for leaks.
- Backs up lead hand, as assigned.
- Performs related duties, including working in other divisional work units, as assigned.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the operation and use of equipment and tools related to traffic sign installation, maintenance, and repair, roads maintenance (e.g., snow plow, wheel loader), and reading, writing, and math skills acquired through a Grade 12 education plus 2 years of related experience.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, related legislation and standards (e.g., traffic and parking by-laws, Ontario Traffic Manual, health and safety, Highway Traffic Act), and on-the-job training including traffic training courses, as required.
- Communication skills to interact and exchange information with other staff and police; respond to general inquiries from the public; use terminology specific to sign materials; and participate as an effective team member.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret plans and blueprints for sign layouts, locates, roundabouts, and traffic control plans. Ability to complete vehicle
