**HIRING: SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST (Pediatric)**

Elves Special Needs Society is a non-profit organization and Private School accredited by Alberta Education, as a Designated Special Education Program (DSEP). We specialize in supporting children, youth, and adults with speech and language delays, or severe cognitive, physical, or social impairments.

Key responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:

- Assessment of children (early education) and youth (Grades One to Twelve) for purposes of diagnosis and treatment.
- Preparation of documents including but not limited to Assessments, Individual Program Plans (IPP), multidisciplinary and transitionary reports.
- Offering appropriate and evidence-based intervention.
- Oversight and guidance of the Speech and Language Pathology Assistants.
- Assisting classroom staff in the development, writing, and monitoring of individualized communication programs.
- Promoting the use of general communication, low tech, and Alternative or Augmentative Communication (AAC), strategies in the classroom to facilitate the development of communication skills. As a member of the Assistive Technology Team (which may include any or all of the follow: parents, teachers, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologist, Physical Therapist, Nurse, and Social Worker), SLP’s will collaborate in the following areas:

- Identify and implement most appropriate intervention or AAC support plan.
- Providing general resources to all staff in the areas of assistive devices (computer use, environmental control devices, adapted micro-switch toys etc.) and provide in-services as necessary.
- Along with OT//PT, providing input to the classroom team regarding the use of low-tech or mid-tech AAC
- Providing input regarding switch placement and mounting.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of assistive technology.
- Providing communication materials for individual or classroom use (i.e. communication book, picture symbols, photographs, sign illustrations).
- Attending Team Meetings, Program Planning days, and Program Review conferences.
- Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of developments in the fields of communication and feeding disorders and providing in-services as necessary.
- Liaise with other community professionals and agencies for purposes of diagnosis, implementation or transition supports.
- Support Feeding and Swallowing screens and referrals to physicians.
- Develop and present workshops to educational teams, families, and/or community members.
- Collaboratively support multi-disciplinary team in preschool and school settings through developmentally appropriate practices.
- Along with the Principal, Educational Consultants, and other designates, support interventions associated with developing pro-social skills and reducing challenging behaviours.

**Education and Experience**:

- The successful applicant must be registered or be eligible to be registered with the Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA).
- Registration with Canadian Association of Speech and Language Pathology would be an asset.
- Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Experience working with children, youth, and adults with severe disabilities and augmentative communication systems preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills required.
