**SOSC-3014**-**101**:Sociology of the Body** (**0.5** credit)**

(_Summer 2024_ Semester: _July 2, 2024_ - _August 9, 2024_; _Tuesday_ and _Thursday_: _3:10PM - 6:10PM_; _In-Person_)_

**COURSE DESCRIPTION**:Embodiment is a process in which social meaning is taken into or upon the physical body. Experiences of embodiment are layered, nuanced, and multifaceted resulting in the segmenting of bodies into attributes that are gendered, racialized, disabled, aged, etc. This can contribute to a sense of fragmentation, alienation, or "disappearance" of the physical body as a whole. Students will investigate techniques sociologists use to explore embodiment and consciousness of the physical body using the following considerations: what embodiment replaces, how embodiment affects lived experiences, and how the physical body, despite all this, surfaces in the lived experience of social life.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to: course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations/reviews; including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- The successful applicant should have a terminal degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience
- Experience teaching at the post secondary level is considered an asset, equivalent relevant experience will be considered
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty
