**Job Summary**

The Garage Supervisor is responsible for planning and coordinating the overall garage operation to effectively control the utilization of shop labour and material. The incumbent develops and monitors targets and standards ensuring optimum productivity and quality levels. The role controls and monitors in-house and commercial garage performance ensuring optimum vehicle servicing at minimum cost, minimum downtime with utmost customer satisfaction and within company guidelines, policies and regulatory requirements. The incumbent ensures timely servicing and availability of critical equipment and protects CN’s daily operations.

**Main Responsibilities**

**Establish, Plan, Coordinate and Monitor Shop and Staff Requirements**
- Ensure maximum productivity and utilization of repair facilities and equipment
- Determine specific staffing, shop space and workload requirements
- Coordinate repair and maintenance programs by equitable distribution of workload
- Ensure facilities are maintained to levels which meet labour and building code requirements
- Maintain and update tools and equipment used in maintenance of the fleet
- Ensure proper documentation of facilities and equipment are kept up to date

**M**onitor and **M**aintain** Automotive Management Information System** (AMIS)**
- Develop and implement maintenance schedules and time standards for equipment and maintain repair parts inventory
- Monitor quality and timeliness of information system updates in AMIS
- Interact with customers and vendors to ensure timely repairs and maintenance are carried out
- Maintain adequate level of inventory part for size and make-up of the fleet
- Schedule maintenance to maximize the efficient utilization of the fleet (minimize downtime)

**R**ecommend**, **S**et, Maintain and Initiate A**ctions**
- Improve productivity of shop operations and standards of maintenance
- Review productivity reports set time standards and monitor through exception reporting and correct actions
- Review repair and maintenance practises, and make recommendations to improve methods

**Develop Garage Operating Budgets**
- Monitor and control monthly expenditures
- Establish best discounts and quality with the supplier network to optimize cost of labour and materials
- Review historic expenditures and forecasts to develop operating budget
- Track ongoing expenses, and take corrective action were needed to ensure expenditures are in line with company policy and budgetary constraints
- Negotiate discounts and quality service levels with supplier network
- Report ongoing budget status, investigate and explain budget variances

**Plan for Short
- and Long-Term Staff Needs**
- Maintain a well-trained and motivated unionized workforce at levels to meet current and future work requirements
- Assess individual performance as part of succession planning strategy
- Assess workload requirements to determine shift and staffing requirements
- Identify training and developmental needs
- Provide on the job and classroom training in repair and maintenance procedures in line with the fleet profile and technological advancement

**Compliance Management**
- Promote and ensure compliance in safety, accident prevention, environmental, National Safety Code, Canada Labour Code, and respective provincial fleet safety standards
- Identify potential unsafe practices, take immediate remedial action and document safety violations
- Hold ongoing Health and Safety Committee meetings
- Ensure committee participation and follow up on recommendations
- Perform safety audits to ensure zero tolerance policy is followed
- Perform Performance Monitoring Compliance Rules (PMRCs) in accordance with company guidelines
- Ensure environmental policy is adhered to and proper documentation is completed
- Understand and follow Canada Labour Code Guidelines
- Ensure vehicle fleet is maintained to all Federal and Provincial safety standards and proper documentation is completed
- Ensure compliance with National Safety Code for the vehicle fleet and staff

**Working Conditions**

The incumbent must be available to work night shifts and weekends when necessary. The role requires occasional travel (20 to 40%). The incumbent requires to walk, climb and is exposed to elements and operating standards.
