**Summary**:
Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Supervisor, Surgical Services is responsible for the overall administration; oversight and coordination of patient care delivery within various designated units within surgical services (e.g., operating rooms, surgical day care, post-anaesthesia care, OR procedure rooms). Provides day-to-day leadership and guidance to staff that supports and enhances clinical practice, ensures effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes by supporting staff development and growth; ensuring expert knowledge is provided to the team in the specialty nursing area; monitoring and evaluating staff performance, identifying staff needs/deficiencies, and developing plans to improve performance; and, ensuring educational, orientation and training needs are identified and met. Formulates, implements and evaluates patient care standards, policies and procedures and communicates requirements to staff. Administers, monitors, and implements budget for the area. Collaborates with the Patient Care Manager and other Surgical Services nursing leaders to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate unit and staff performance measures. Collaborates with other interdisciplinary team members and interfaces with other departments to ensure timely and seamless delivery of services.

**Qualifications / Skills and Education**:
Education
Baccalaureate in Nursing is required plus qualifications required of staff nurse in the clinical area. Five (5) years recent, related experience in clinical specialty including two (2) years recent experience in supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives.

Ability to use evidence-based practice to develop and implement standards of practice that guide work practices and quality and safety improvement initiatives.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service.
Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
Demonstrated skill at delegation, supervision and evaluation of care.
Strong fiscal planning and administration skills.
Ability to mentor, coach and role model standards of practice to staff.
Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team and promote positive working relationships.
Ability to develop, prioritize and accomplish objectives.
Ability to adjust to new or unexpected events and make decisions.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Assumes overall responsibility for the delivery of patient/client care within the designated units/sites/programs by supervising staff, coordinating or delegating patient/client assignments, developing rotations, approving vacation, short-term leaves and overtime. Monitors activities, reviews patient outcomes, recommends improvements and recommends changes to relevant standards/practices to ensure designated units are functioning at optimal levels of quality, safety and efficiency and in line with established organizational targets.

Monitors and evaluates staff work performance, sets performance goals/objectives, and defines areas for improvement. Completes performance reviews and plans for assigned staff members, and takes corrective action as necessary. Works with Clinical Nurse Leaders/Nurse Educators to ensure staff performance improvement plans are implemented, objectives met, and follows up to determine effectiveness.

Manages employee relations’ issues including assuming responsibility for up to step two of the grievance procedure. Works with Patient Care Manager or Human Resources toward resolution of issues.

Provides leadership for clinical practice by identifying best practices and formulating, implementing and evaluating patient care standards and polices and procedures. Provides direction to Clinical Nurse Leaders/Nurse Educators on the planning process, staff communication, implementation, and outcome measures.

Assumes responsibility for administration of the staffing budget for designated nursing units including budget development and planning activities. Implements and monitors budget (e.g., use of sick time, overtime) against required targets. Identifies variances and adjusts schedules/resource allocation accordingly to stay within established budget.
