As the Equipment Operator II, you will contribute to the maintenance and improvement of Strathcona County’s Urban Forest and recreational areas by safely operating a variety of self-propelled and small equipment, performing manual labour and training other staff in the safe operation of equipment.

**Responsibilities**:

- Urban forestry maintenance and operations including tree pruning (ground, aerial and climbing), hazardous tree assessment, and response to storm damage
- Operate self-propelled equipment including a variety of trucks, aerial devices, chippers, stump grinders, trailers, gas powered and electric hand tools and a variety of small equipment such as chainsaws, brush saws, drills in a safe and efficient manner
- Monitor, maintain, and service equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards
- Use and share knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations and Code, follow safety guidelines, identify potential hazardous situations and adapt appropriately
- Assist Team Lead position by training other staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment
- Display accountability when providing direction, training, and overseeing the work of small crews in the completion of assigned tasks, and assist with other related duties

**Skills and Abilities**
- Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills to interact in a positive manner with others
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions, and to maintain concentration and alertness for extended periods of time
- Ability to adapt to new and changing situations, combined with initiative and responsibility
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of related equipment and tools

**Qualifications**
- Current International Society of Arboriculture Certification is required
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum 3 years’ experience in landscaping, forestry, golf course, playground, agricultural practices or related area
- Previous experience operating trucks, trailers, ride-on mowers, tractors, skid steers and/or small equipment and engines (e.g. chainsaws, chippers, drills, etc.)
- Air brake endorsement (Q) would be an asset
- The following are considered assets:

- Certified chainsaw training
- Certified Aerial Device training
- Certified Tree Climbing training
- Journeyman Landscape Gardeners Certification (completed or in process)
- Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)

**Conditions of Employment**
- Submission of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
- Current and valid Standard First Aid Certification
- Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour, including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 23 kilograms), standing, bending, shoveling, etc.
- Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement weather and adverse weather conditions
