Traffic Field Operations manufactures, installs and maintains all traffic control signs, pavement markings, EPark machines as well as provides temporary traffic control for emergencies, construction and special events on City-wide road right of way.
Reporting to the Sign Shop Team Leader, the Sign Shop Worker is responsible for designing and manufacturing a wide variety of signs and decals for the City of Edmonton. This position will be involved directly in the design and manufacturing process, taking signing projects from start to finish using multiple manufacturing methods with both automated and manual equipment.
With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:
- Determine the material and equipment required to manufacture sign
- Design text and graphics for custom sign requests using various computer software programs
- Layout text and graphics to produce high quality product using various computer software programs
- Ensure signage meets any applicable standard, policy or procedure required for that sign
- Work with Team Leader or clients to ensure the needs of the stakeholder are achieved
- Export digital design to vinyl printer, cutter or plotter
- Calibration of equipment, including color proofing and media selection to ensure quality product
- Troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment
- Laminate digital prints
- Prepare vinyl sheeting for masking
- Place graphics on screen surface for developing image using UV exposure
- Wash, clean and prepare screen for printing
- Screen print by hand or automated press
- Prepare and mix ink
- Clean, maintain, troubleshoot screen and equipment
- Follow all safety procedures and processes for use of chemicals
- Perform other related duties as required
**Qualifications**:
- Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with course work in graphics
- 3 years of experience in the production of traffic control signs and decals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Knowledge of computer graphics hardware and software used in design and production
- Completion of commercial sign writing courses will be considered an asset
- Knowledge of other signing software will be considered an asset
- Utilize photographic equipment, presses, manual and automated fil-cutting, silkscreening and stenciling techniques
- Ability to work with a variety of ink odors and thinners (lacquer, vinyl, scotchlite and acrylic)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders
- Experience working independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, where attention to detail is required
- Ability to adapt and manage changing priorities and workflow
- Knowledge of Signlab 9, Corel Draw, Google Suite and Microsoft Office
- Ability to work with chemicals, manually lift moderate to heavy materials and tools and perform sedentary and repetitive tasks
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (must be clean-shaven) is a requirement for this position
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
