Special Education Coordinator

Only 35 minutes by water taxi from Tofino, Maaqtusiis Elementary School serves the Ahousaht Nation on the west coast of Vancouver Island. We are a trauma-informed school empowering strong, proud and resilient children to rise above the effects of colonization, residential schools, cultural genocide and racism. We are committed to reflecting and supporting the revitalization of Ahousaht culture and language. With 15-20 students per classroom from Kindergarten to Grade 7, class sizes allow for high-quality instruction.

**Duties & Responsibilities include, but not limited to**:
?Is qualified in Special Education and certified in Level B Testing.

?Ideally, has several years of classroom experience using Reading Mastery & Corrective Reading

?Is able to support the development, implementation, communication, monitoring and evaluation of support plans (Student care plans, IEP, behaviour intervention strategies) for students who require additional supports

?Is able to assist classroom teachers with the design and implementation of an appropriate educational program complete with universal and essential supports to meet the individual needs of students

?Can work collaboratively with supervisor, teachers, educational assistants, parents, outside professionals and community agencies while maintaining healthy boundaries

?Is able and willing to adapt and modify the curriculum to meet the individual needs of students

?Is willing to design and implement a positive classroom management plan aligned with the School Wide Positive Behaviour System

?Is willing to deliver programs using an inquiry-based mindset approach

?Believes that a positive, caring rapport with students is foundational to learning.

?Uses differentiated learning strategies to enable all students to reach their highest potential.

?Is a self-starter who is keen to learn about and participate in the local community life.

?Understands and uses a trauma informed approach in professional practice

?Experience and knowledge using competency-based assessment strategies.

?Experience in integrating appropriate technologies into instructional practices to improve learning outcomes for students.

?Ability to work collaboratively with fellow teachers, education assistants, support staff and parents/guardians

?Strong interpersonal and communication skills

?Strong critical and creative thinking skills

?Adaptability and independence

?Maintains confidentiality
