**About Us**:
Alberta Justice, Legal Services Division, is responsible for providing quality legal advice to the Government of Alberta. Within the Division, the Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team (FASCL) provides legal services and advice to Children’s Services, Community and Social Services, Maintenance Enforcement and the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee. FASCL also acts as the Central Authority with respect to Hague Convention matters (International Child Abduction).

**Role**:
The Legal Services Division is seeking Legal Officers at the LO1-LO3 classification level to join the Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team in Edmonton (FASCL Edmonton).

We are looking for lawyers with advocacy experience at the Provincial Court level and/or the Court of King’s Bench.

Key responsibilities include:

- Appearing in Court of King’s Bench on appeals of child protection matters and in Court of King’s Bench Chambers for family law related matters;
- Effective management of a busy litigation caseload;
- Reviewing and assessing documents for disclosure;
- Providing advice and support to the client groups regarding child protection issues, adoptions, child support and maintenance enforcement;
- Drafting clear, concise, and accurate legal opinions.
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills;
- Trial experience;
- Strong negotiation and alternate dispute resolution skills;
- Effective problem solving and interpersonal skills;
- Experience providing practical, client-focused advice to enable decision-making;
- Experience conducting legal research and preparing legal opinions;
- Ability to think strategically;
- Ability to work independently; and
- Strong commitment to the Vision and Values of the Alberta Public Service.

**Qualifications**:
For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is **required**.

Assets:

- Family law experience, may include demonstrated work experience with the Alberta Family Law Act, the federal Divorce Act and the Child Support guidelines, and the Maintence Enforcement Program; the Alberta Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and the federal legislation an Act respecting First Nation, Inuit and Métis Children, youth and familes S.C. 2019, c.24.; OR
- Criminal prosecutions experience.

Legal Counsel 1 (up to 4 years of related experience): $3,093.72 to $3,985.94 bi-weekly ($80,746 - $104,033/year)

Legal Counsel 2 (4 years to 13 years of related experience): $4,445.92 to $5,670.90 bi-weekly ($116,038 - $148,010/year)

Legal Counsel 3 (more than 11 years of related experience): $5,604.75 to $6,547.96 bi-weekly ($146,283 - $170,901/year)

Hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15 am - 4:30 pm (36.25/week)
