The Workers’ Advisers Program is a public agency established in 1996 under Part III of the Workers’ Compensation Act to provide free legal assistance, advice, and representation to eligible injured workers and their families seeking workers’ compensation benefits.

The Workers’ Advisers Program has 21 staff located in our Halifax and Sydney offices. Workers’ Advisers (lawyers and non-lawyers) travel around the Province to meet with clients and represent them at hearings and in other matters. The Program provides legal representation at all levels of decision-making in the workers’ compensation system, including at Court if necessary.

**About Our Opportunity**:
In accordance with legislation, regulations, procedures, departmental and government policies and professional standards, the Paralegal is responsible for providing the Workers’ Advisers Program with a variety of case and file management and administrative services. Subject to the direction of the Program’s Manager, Chief Worker Adviser, the Registrar, and Workers’ Advisers, the Paralegal must respect and maintain the solicitor-client relationship which exists between each of the Program’s clients and the Program and its employees.

The Paralegal plays a significant role in the day-to-day operations of the office. The Paralegal is meticulous and thorough in all work processes and procedures while bringing a positive approach and works cooperatively in a team environment. The Paralegal is also sensitive to the needs of all clients both internal and external which is essential for Program staff to further facilitate the Workers’ Advisers Program operating at its best possible capacity.

This position reports to the Manager.

We are recruiting for two positions - one in each of our Halifax and Sydney offices.

**Primary Accountabilities**:

- Provides administrative support to the Workers’ Advisers Program’s Chief Worker Adviser, Registrar, and Manager.
- Prepares high quality and specialized documentation and correspondence relevant to workers’ compensation claim and appeal matters, including Books of Appeal, Factum and Books of Authority for court as necessary, and is knowledgeable about relevant statutes and other legal instruments, relevant judicial and quasi-judicial decisions, and appropriate research resources.
- Processes legal documentation for issuance by ensuring timely filings and the execution and service of documents.
- Assists and supports Workers’ Advisers’ preparation for hearings and pre-hearing procedures by gathering evidence, locating and interviewing potential witnesses and resource persons, doing timely follow up on evidence requests, and drafting research memorandums and routine legal arguments.
- Contributes to the effective and efficient operation of the Workers’ Advisers Program team by organizing client and witness meetings.
- Assists in the effective management of client files by maintaining and updating paper and electronic files, completing file reviews and summaries, and tracking and diarizing file activity.
- Communicates directly with clients regarding the status of their cases and provides answers to general questions with respect to the workers’ compensation system.
