**About Us**:
The **Crop Assurance Section** deals with a wide range of diverse and rapidly evolving issues, projects, and programs that directly impact Alberta's agriculture and food sectors.

**Role**:
The Crop Assurance Specialist in the Crop Assurance Section holds the responsibility of leading and offering technical expertise to Alberta Agriculture's regulatory partners regarding crop health and assurance programs, policies, and legislation. This role involves the development and execution of interdisciplinary research on regulations and policies, as well as engaging with stakeholders who have an impact on the crop industry. The aim is to provide recommendations for improvements in crop legislation and policies. A comprehensive understanding of cropping systems in Western Canada is essential for this position. Additionally, the Crop Assurance Specialist will educate and raise awareness about agricultural legislation such as the _Agricultural Pests Act, Weed Control Act, Agricultural Service Board Act_, and _associated regulations_.

This position will play a crucial part in ensuring that crop and bee health initiatives are adequately understood and communicated to the crop regulatory partners in Alberta. It entails engaging with stakeholders and fostering collaboration to gather, identify, and interpret information in order to generate value and achieve objectives. The individual will provide analysis, expertise, and advice on opportunities and issues related to crop and bee health assurance. This support will contribute to evidence-based policy research and development. Moreover, the position will be responsible for acquiring and maintaining a high level of competency in the plant and bee health sectors. This expertise will ensure that the department and industry partners benefit from the latest advancements in these areas.

**Qualifications**:
**University graduation in Agriculture or a related degree**, with appropriate specialization, **plus three (3) years related experience**; or equivalent as described below. **Must be eligible for membership with the AIA.**

**Equivalency**: Directly related education or experience **may **be considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

**Additional Requirements**:

- Eligible for to become either a Professional Agrologist with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists or Professional Biologist with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.
- Valid driver’s license

**Assets**:

- Proficient understanding and practical experience with relevant legislation from the Government of Alberta (GOA), specifically the _Agricultural Service Board Act, the Weed Control Act, the Agricultural Pest Act, _and _the Soil Conservation Act_.
- Expertise in policy development, supported by substantial experience and knowledge in this field.
- In-depth familiarity with the agriculture industry, farming/ranching practices, and invasive species, along with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders.
- Extensive knowledge of the agriculture industry, including farming/ranching operations, and expertise in dealing with invasive species, coupled with a strong track record of working alongside stakeholders.
- Proven capability to travel extensively across rural areas of Alberta, even in challenging weather conditions, and engage with rural Albertans in remote locations.
- Considerable experience in creating impactful presentations and delivering speeches to large audiences.
- Proficiency in comprehending Ministry Business/Strategic Plans and possessing political acumen.
- Strong communication and team collaboration skills, complemented by excellent abilities in data analysis, writing, and computer proficiency.
