The Office if the Merit Commissioner (the Office) is a unique Office in Canada in that it provides independent oversight of hiring in the BC Public Service. The Office conducts random audits, internal staffing reviews, and reviews just-cause dismissals to annually report out the findings to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. This team blends human resources expertise with a discerning eye for process, legislation and fairness.

Reporting to the Merit Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner leads the strategic development and conduct of the audit program, leads the dismissal review process program, and manages the conduct and preparation of recommendations for employee-requested staffing reviews. The Deputy develops the Office’s strategic and operational work plans, including the identification and conduct of special audits and studies. The Deputy manages the Office and leads a small group of professionals. The Deputy also selects and manages the contracts for resources that conduct staffing audits, reviews, and dismissal process reviews.

Located in downtown Victoria, this role offers a team focused environment where collaboration is paramount within the immediate team as well as within the other independent offices of the Legislature.

In the first year you can expect to:

- Lead the development of the Annual Report, Merit Performance Audit, the Staffing Review Report, and the Office’s Service plan.
- Participate in the legislative review of the dismissal process aspect of the work as required by the BC Public Service Act.
- Implement new auditing software that will improve the efficiency and impact of the office programs and metrics.
