Children's Respite
Intellectual Disabilities (North and West Vancouver) Society supports individuals living with intellectual disabilities to thrive in the unique life they choose. IDS is a mid-sized, non-profit organization that provides a variety of residential, community, and employment services. We see a community where all people with disabilities equal opportunities must lead active, fulfilling lives and are recognized as contributing members of the community.
Respite is supervisory care and support to an individual with the intent of providing rest and rejuvenation for the parent(s).
**Children’s Respite Program**
Respite support offers families, a much-needed break. Respite is also about meaningful relationships that develop between the child and the respite contractor. The respite contractor often becomes like an extended family member to both the parents and the child.
**Job Goal**
The Children’s respite program provides cost-free support to families of children with disabilities either in the family’s home or in an approved location within the community. This program supports children with a variety of disabilities, is no-cost, and is funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). The goal of the program is to provide families with a break from caring for their child with a disability. The program also allows children with disabilities to develop new relationships and access a variety of stimulating environments with the support of a qualified contractor.
**EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE**
- Previous experience and related skills would be an asset.
**Job Skills and Ability**
- Respite caregivers are passionate about working with children and youth and can support one or more families, depending on how much time they can commit to caregiving. Some people provide respite care prior to becoming full-time foster caregivers and use the time to build their skills and experience.
**Additional Information**
- The program is flexible and tailored to meet the individual and changing needs of each family. Respite hours may be used by families for ongoing, regular support or they may be used to provide longer-term care for family vacations or a regularly scheduled weekend break.
- **The hours vary and would depend on family needs
- it starts off as 4 hours per week**:
