Oxfam Canada is an affiliate of the international Oxfam Confederation networked in over 85 countries as part of a global movement for change. Our mission is to build lasting solutions to poverty and injustice with a focus on improving the lives and promoting the rights of women and girls. We work directly with communities, partners and women's rights organizations to challenge the systems that perpetuate inequality and keep people poor. Together we seek to influence those in power to ensure that women trapped in poverty have a say in the critical decisions that affect them, their families and entire communities. That’s why we believe that ending global poverty begins with women’s rights.
We are a diverse organization, with over half of our Staff and our Board identifying as Black or People of Color (BIPOC); two thirds of our Staff identifying as immigrants to Canada; strong representation from women and 2SLGBTQI+ people; and richness of languages, religions and countries of origin (Source: Oxfam Canada Demographic Survey 2023). As an organization and as individuals, we stand against all systems of oppression, violence, and hate. We stand for justice, equity, diversity, inclusion (JEDI) and decolonization within our organization and society at large, guided by our Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Principles (ARAO) and our Feminist Principles.
Our office is located on unceded, unsurrendered territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin First Nation. We recognize the longstanding relationship the Algonquin have with this territory that has been nurtured since time immemorial. We also pay respect to all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples who remain on their traditional lands that we now know as Canada. We acknowledge the historical and ongoing oppression and colonization of the people and the loss of culture and land. We recognize the valuable past, present and future contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples as customary keepers and defenders of this territory. We honour their culture, knowledge, leadership and courage. We commit to acting in solidarity with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in their struggles for self-determination and decolonization and in support of the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2015) and the Calls for Justice of the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (2019).
