THE ORGANIZATION

The Edmonton Police Association (EPA) is a labour union that represents members which are sworn officers of the Edmonton Police Service. The Association responsibilities have expanded but the core roots of the Association are the collective bargaining on behalf of its members. The Association also has the Edmonton Policeman’s Benevolent Fund which is an avenue whereby Police Officers could obtain financial assistance during troubled times as well as several other great programs and services for its members.

THE ROLE
- Labour Relations Strategy, Collective Bargaining and Labour Contract Administration:_
- Execute the organization's labour relations strategy in alignment with its overall goals and objectives.
- Under the Executive direction, participate in the collective bargaining process for the EPA, including contract negotiations, interpretation, and administration.
- Provide advice and guidance to the Executive related to labour relations issues and recommend proactive measures to maintain positive employee relations.
- Conduct research and analysis to prepare for negotiations, including reviewing collective agreements, labour laws, and industry benchmarks.
- Ensure effective administration and compliance with negotiated labour contracts.
- Manage the grievance process, adhering to relevant timelines, reviews and arbitration hearings.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, such as HR and legal teams, to ensure compliance with labour laws and regulations.
- Disability Management Advocacy:_
- Act as a representative for members with the employer and insurer.
- Support and advise members by interpreting relevant policy, procedure and case-management decisions including WCB and STD/LTD Insurers.
- File, prepare and conduct decision review process and appeal hearings.
- Demonstrate advocacy on behalf of the members, in a positive, equitable and respectful manner as required.
- General:_
- Foster a positive and collaborative work culture, encouraging professional growth and development.
- Ensure effective communication, coordination, and resource allocation to meet organizational objectives, with staff and members alike.
- Other ad-hoc duties and projects, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), or equivalent degree from a recognized institution and an active member in good standing, or eligible for membership with The Law Society of Alberta is preferred. University degree with extensive experience in labour relations at a senior level will be considered.
- At least 5 years of experience in labour, employment, OH&S, WCB, Human Rights law.
- At least 5 years of experience working with the collective bargaining process.
- Experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) models is required.
- Excellent leadership, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including written and verbal.
- Experience with Police Act, Police Service Regulations, Police Officers Collective Bargaining Act or law enforcement is a strong asset.
- Demonstrated Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including board members, volunteers, and staff.
- Commitment to professionalism, ethical practices and exceptional integrity is required.
- Enhanced security screening and clearance is required.
