**POSITIION SUMMARY**
The Biologist will provide technical capacity to manage First Nations’ food, social and ceremonial fisheries, habitat preservation and restoration, and lobbying the issue of rights and title where required with the agencies that need to hear the First Nations voice and stand. This will include traditional land use parameters, and criteria adherence for development and aquatic habitat restoration. The biologist will, as required, participate or assist in off-reserve environmental projects with a Seabird interest. Projects may include construction environmental management on reserve, contaminated sites investigations and remediations, aquatic habitat restoration, and environmental assessments involving surveying and monitoring.

The work and leadership will be key to the renewal of the conservation and protection strategies, and to ensure that the Band’s approach to fisheries incorporates biological, cultural, environmental and community perspectives. The position will include research, reporting, documenting, and liaising with staff and professional consultants, to meet deliverables like mitigation plans, community engagement, and environmental sustainability.

**WHAT YOU'LL DO**
- Ensure and promote First Nations fishing rights and traditional harvest rights, including lobby actions.
- Assist the department lead with the scoping, planning, development, budgeting, and execution of environmental projects including major referrals, habitat enhancement, and environmental monitoring.
- Lobby and work with governing bodies to ensure UNDRIP stipulations are met with respect to fisheries and fisheries access.
- Responsible for data collection, compilation, interpretation, and reporting for environmental project related to fisheries, habitat and/or aquatic resources.
- Monitor the commercial, recreational, and First Nations fisheries openings and fishing activities.
- Undertake activities in the field related to habitat management/enhancement/restoration, environmental monitoring, and stock assessment.
- Carry out community engagement and educational activities.
- Represent Seabird at the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance, ensuring a strong voice for First Nations with respect to conservation and First Nations vs commercial and recreational fishing access.
- Work to protect and rebuild species at risk and species of cultural importance to Seabird and / or unique to this region and habitat.
- Assist with the approach, involvement and response to incoming Seabird Island Referrals.
- Present at, and participate in, conferences, technical workshops, webinars, and training.
**Research**:
- Research and interpret data from reliable sources on fisheries and impacts to aquatic wildlife and habitat from industry, infrastructure, and land use.
- Develop or identify baseline and trend information to base decisions for habitat and species management.
- Assess key indicators on habitat enhancement and protection measures.
- Assist in developing a broad-spectrum framework to be used to monitor key indicators and effects over time. This will include spatial and temporal data that can be collected and evaluated to determine trends and cumulative effects.
- Report and present on scientific findings.
**Administrative**:
- Detailed note taking and recording of information sessions.
- Compile reports and summations for department, and funding agency
- Attend relevant internal and external meetings, conferences, and training as required.
