**Institute Overview**

**Position Summary**

The Museum Curator is a staff member of the RCMI and is responsible to the General Manager for the day-to-day administration and the effective operation of the RCMI Museum within budgetary constraints. The incumbent has a close and functional working relationship with the Museum Committee and is an ex-officio Committee member. As an ambassador of the RCMI in dealing with internal and external constituents, the incumbent must present a professional and polished image.

The Museum Curator is a permanent part-time position, 2 ½ days per week (max. 20 hours) and oversees and is fully accountable for the preservation of the RCMI’s museum and artifacts. The position reports directly to the General Manager. Work hours may fluctuate based on project demands, at the sole discretion of the Museum Curator and of the General Manager as Supervisor.

**The primary functions of the Museum Curator include, but are not restricted to, the following**:

- Managing, assembling, cataloguing, and presenting all aspects of the RCMI’s artistic and cultural artifacts and collections within its Museum Collection, with full accountability for the preservation, maintenance, and secure custody of the RCMI Museum and artifacts. Ensuring input on Museum matters from the Museum Committee through the Museum Chair (including incoming and outgoing artifact loans).
- Overseeing and curating all the Museum Collection’s exhibitions and displays, with input from the Museum Committee through the Museum Chair (permanent, temporary, travelling, and virtual).
- In consultation with the Museum Chair, ensure an annual work plan is in place at the beginning of each fiscal year and adhered to, signed off by both parties and a copy given to the General Manager for review. Also ensuring that amendments proposed to the annual work plan from time to time are submitted and approved through the process just described. Assisting in the development of periodic strategic plans for the Museum and their implementation (part of the work plan); assisting with the Museum portion of the Institute’s long-term strategic plan and focus as determined from time to time.
- Drafting, reviewing, and/or revising the creation of museum paperwork as required (i.e. interpretive plans, _Museum Pieces_, donation lists, acquisition opportunities, or networking justifications etc.). Ensuring all paperwork pertaining to the Museum, including but not limited to purchase orders, payroll, travel expenses etc. are approved by the General Manager and submitted to the accounting office for processing in a timely manner.
- Supervising and directing the activities of the Curator Emeritus, museum contractors, volunteers, and students (interns). More precisely, the Museum Curator will delegate tasks and responsibilities to museum team members, including, but not limited to the museum catalogue, photography, processing donations (and tax receipts) and other various collections management, display, and research projects. The Museum Curator may also consider proposed Museum project submissions that may be made by members of the Board and the Institute from time to time.
- Developing the Museum’s annual operating budget as per guidelines provided, with input from the Museum Chair. Managing all Museum expenses in line with the budget. Attending Museum Committee meetings in person or virtually (if unable to attend in person), and providing professional support, recommendations, information, and guidance to the Committee.
- In consultation with the Museum Chair, managing museum donors and incoming donations - including the approval or disapproval of donations offered to the museum. Submitting lists of artifacts to be deaccessioned for approval by the Executive Committee and the Museum Chair in preparation for the annual Museum Auction. Also, submitting lists of artifacts desired for the Museum Collection from time to time for approval by the Executive Committee and the Museum Chair. Working in collaboration with the accounting office and Museum Chair on issuing tax receipts to donors as per guidelines provided and on a timely basis.
- Providing support and guidance for Museum events, including but not limited to book launches, Military History Symposiums, speaker events etc., including events coordinated by other parties. Delegating this responsibility to other qualified parties within the RCMI when workload pressures make this necessary. Managing relationships with museum partners/stakeholders on selected projects and partnerships.
- Making recommendations to the Museum Committee for content (theme) and speakers for the Museum’s Annual Military History Symposium.
- Researching, writing, and publishing materials on selected Canadian military history topics for internal or external publications, when deemed appropriate.
