Job Description Summary
The School of Biomedical Engineering is a partnership between the Faculties of Medicine and Applied Science. The School is a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering; creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation. The School is currently responsible for 350+ undergraduate students, 140+ graduate students and 30+ faculty. Over time, the School will be responsible for as many as 400+ undergraduate students, 200+ graduate students and 40+ faculty.
The Research Technician will provide technical support for the Biomedical Research Centre building for the School of Biomedical Engineering. We offer an open and collaborative research environment and as such we are looking for talented individual to join our core team. The Research Technician serving as the lab supply store and equipment technician will be responsible for the overall tasks associated with the operation of the store, the maintenance of simple equipment, and general maintenance work that are of limited complexity in nature.
Organizational Status
The Research Technician reports directly to the Building Manager, and works collaboratively with other technicians, faculty, students and staff.
Work Performed
- Stocking store supplies, monitor supply level and order supply as needed.
- Assisting in monthly inventory count, counting supplies checked out by each lab to compile a list of items sold.
- May assist in running a laboratory, performing tasks, such as, purchasing supplies and minor equipment and maintaining parts of accounts.
- Assisting in general building shipping and receiving and the distribution of the shipments to the labs.
- Assisting in identifying research tools that need maintenance, and informing the assistant building manager to coordinate repair work.
- Preparing equipment and supply for lab use, including washing glassware, preparing supplies for autoclaving, prepares PBS, aliquoting supplies, packing tips, etc.
- Plans and performs experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques; troubleshoots problems; collects, records, analyses and interprets experiment results.
- Provides training to undergraduate students, new and lower level technicians in the use of equipment, techniques and procedures.
- Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety rules and procedures.
- Responsible for general building cleaning including kitchen/lunchroom, hallway, taking out lab wastes, and maintaining the building in a clean condition
- Assisting with general building tasks such as answering door, setting up tables and chairs for seminars, moving equipment, furniture, etc.
- Assisting with lab cleanups and setups
- Carries out other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The work described follows protocols and techniques that have been designed by senior laboratory members. The position requires strong organizational, multi-tasking and communication skills. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential. Failure to keep the supplies well stocked, and equipment in working condition could potentially result in delaying research. Failure to keep the building in a clean and safe condition will result in safety and risk management issues that could potentially damage the School s and Centre s reputation. Errors could compromise the scientific integrity of a project.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision of the Building Manager and indirectly reports to the Director, Strategic Planning and Operations on any major issues. Receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.

May oversee and direct the work of one or two employees at lower classifications in which case they are responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit.
