In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the Registered Nurse job description, the Charge Nurse will provide clinical support to frontline staff.This role will be responsible for ensuring assignments are done, be responsible for scheduling of nurses including arranging for coverage for absences, oversee service of equipment/supplies, work with internal and external partners such as other units and the operating rooms. The Charge Nurse will work within a multidisciplinary care team and will also collaborate with the Clinical Manager and/or Director, Perioperative Services, and Patient Flow Supervisor to ensure the efficient and effective flow within the Operating Room. The Charge Nurse will also act as a resource nurse by providing clinical front-line expertise in all aspects of the delivery of care within the specified clinical area.Summary of duties, but not limited to:Responsible for the scheduling of nurses and covering absences.Assists in ensuring assignments are doneWorks collaboratively with the OR team members and surgeons.Works collaboratively with the Clinical Manager and/or Director, Perioperative Services and the Patient Flow Supervisor.Shows initiative in organizing the daily activities of the OR for the provision of quality patient care.Participates in orientation and assesses needs of new employees, students.Participates in continuous quality assurance activities.Ensures all supplies and equipment are available for perioperative care.Using a holistic and integrated approach, the RN works with members of the inter-professional team, patients and their families to provide comprehensive care.Continuously seeks to improve care processes and patient outcomes by improving safety and quality through the integration and evaluation of evidence, nursing theory, professional standards, and legislative requirements.Disseminates comprehensive nursing knowledge and skill using adult learning principles while supporting colleagues, nursing students.Participates in inter-professional teaching/learning of medical students (residents, fellows, and elective students) and health discipline students.Works collaboratively with the Women’s College Hospital (WCH) inter-professional team of RNs, physicians, and administrative assistants to coordinate care including tests, consults, completion of forms, and procedures and facilitates necessary follow-up as needed.Liaises with physicians, nurses, and other staff both within WCH and in other health care settings to ensure timeliness of procedures and continuity of patient care.Works collaboratively with the inter-professional leadership team to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient-centred care, and advance nursing best practices.As a role model and champion you will work to identify and integrate safe, best practices into daily activities to foster the delivery of safe and exemplary care.The responsibilities described above are representative and are not to be construed as all-inclusive.QualificationsBachelors in Nursing is preferred.Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario requiredPerioperative Nursing Certificate requiredPerioperative Certification CPN(c) an asset.BCLS certification requiredPrevious minor surgical perioperative experience preferredDemonstrates initiative and ability to function both independently and as a team member in a fast-paced demanding environment.Excellent assessment and organizational skills.Proven attendance and punctuality.Professional behaviour and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women’s College HospitalThis position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for allWhy Choose Us?Be part of a dedicated team committed to excellence.Shape the future of healthcare in a supportive environment.Enjoy competitive benefits and an excellent defined benefit pension plan (HOOPP).Women's College Hospital is a fully affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Toronto and is committed to fairness and equity in employment and our recruitment and selection practices.
