Duties Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is responsible for continuously monitoring, investigating, and reporting on natural hazards such as earthquakes and space weather events that occur in Canada. The agency operates seismic, geodetic, and space weather monitoring stations across Canada and overseas. The findings and alerts contribute to the safety of Canadians and critical infrastructure operations. NRCan, through the Canadian Hazards Information Service (CHIS), is looking to support operation of these monitoring stations by adding members to an existing national‑scale Field Operations team. Design, construct, and operate electronic equipment and geophysical monitoring instruments at remote stations, including the northernmost regions. Perform station maintenance and remotely monitor the transmission of data from the stations to CHIS data acquisition hubs. Promptly take corrective actions to ensure operational needs are met. Support field work in remote and extreme North locations for up to 4 months a year, with periods up to 5 weeks. Physical and Logistical Requirements Willing to do field work in remote locations, including extreme North in Canada, up to 4 months a year. Willing to drive field vehicles (trucks, snowmobiles, all‑terrain vehicles). Willing to travel via helicopter, boat, and small aircraft. Willing to work in confined spaces and on 10 m high towers. Willing to work overtime, including weekends, and during operations such as field work. Willing to lift and carry heavy objects up to 32 kg over variable terrain. Valid driver’s license (Class 5 or Class G equivalent). Medical certificate (arranged by NRCan at the time of hire). Must be willing and able to relocate to the position location. Operational Requirements Valid First Aid and CPR. Valid Safety training. You need (essential for the job) Applicants must clearly explain how they meet the following: Completion of a secondary school diploma and a program in electronics technology or an employer‑approved alternative. Significant and extensive experience as an electronic technologist or technician, including operation and maintenance of advanced analog and digital test and measurement devices. Experience designing, developing, testing, and repairing electronic equipment such as prototypes, monitoring instruments, communication devices, and power supplies. Planning and organizing logistics for complex field trips and documenting the process using spreadsheets or project planning software. Significant manual labour experience, including use of hand and power tools. Extensive experience is defined as at least 3 years. Applied / assessed at a later date: Knowledge of the theories and techniques of electronic circuitry, high‑precision analog circuitry and systems. Knowledge of software tools such as spreadsheets, ticketing systems, and inventory systems. Knowledge of computer networking and data telemetry via mobile, ethernet, satellite, and radio. Knowledge of power supplies, such as AC‑to‑DC, DC‑to‑AC, and photovoltaic. Ability to troubleshoot, repair and improve electronic equipment and systems. Ability to manage and conduct complex tasks under time pressure, emergency or rapidly evolving conditions. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally. Language requirements (essential for the job) Applicants must have the following: Experience installing and operating instruments. Experience operating snowmobiles, all‑terrain vehicles, and driving with trailers. Experience maintaining and repairing small engines, vehicles, or appliances. Knowledge of computer programming languages. Knowledge of Linux operating systems.
