Sr. Manager, Underwriting at MERIX Financial This position directs, leads, and motivates the Underwriting Team, setting the operational business plan to enforce policies and procedures. The role ensures timely, accurate processing of broker‑originated business, aligns with RMUP policies, mitigates operational risk, and delivers a best‑in‐class customer experience. Planning and Performance Drive and execute the yearly Business Plan. Develop, implement, and monitor specific business‑unit objectives. Recommend operational enhancements to improve customer experience. Manage escalated and complex loan issues. Ensure compliance with RMUP and internal/external risk tolerances. Respond to reputation‑impacting issues diplomatically. Distribute mortgage applications efficiently to meet service standards. Ensure staff understands RMUP policy and risk objectives. Monitor activities for adherence to documented processes. Resolve escalated documentation or closing issues. Make mortgage decisions per Loan Authority approval and MCAP policies. Maintain current knowledge of MCAP and market conditions. Master underwriting systems, credit guidelines, and investigation processes. Implement Mortgage Insurer and Lender/Investor policy guidelines on defaulted loan workouts. Recommend procedural changes based on industry trends. Make decisions aligned with strategic priorities. Relationship Management Act as Ambassador of MCAP SFO Underwriting, executing Lender/Investor/Insurer initiatives. Provide proactive recommendations for improvements and opportunities. Resolve escalated issues and facilitate audit requests related to funding. Lead and manage projects. Promote profitable residential mortgages by fostering broker relationships. Build and maintain timely broker relationships. Maintain good relationships with insurers and BDMs. Create awareness of opportunities and gaps with MCAP Credit/Risk. Promote mortgage products to brokers and their clients. Represent MCAP at industry meetings and events. Lead and Manage Staff Champion MCAP’s Vision, Mission, and Values. Recruit and develop people aligned with values and culture. Lead and coach direct reports to achieve goals. Establish and communicate performance standards. Educate, coach, and counsel staff for confidence and professionalism. Identify strengths and provide career pathways. Set goals and guide employee development. Address performance gaps with improvement plans. Plan succession and continuous development. Maintain effective communication throughout the unit. Encourage a continuous‑improvement culture. Handle disciplinary issues and recommend hiring when necessary. Qualifications 5 years of business experience in the Residential Mortgage Industry. 5 years in a leadership role. Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills. Conflict resolution and negotiation abilities. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of Real Estate law across provinces. Familiarity with CMHC, Canada Guaranty, and Genworth policies. Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP) preferred. University degree. Ability to motivate and lead teams independently. Capable of multi‑tasking in a fast‑paced environment. Innovative problem‑solving and resource‑mobilization skills.
