Senior Engineer, Naval Architecture

OverviewThe Senior Engineer, Naval Architecture is responsible for carrying out naval architecture assignments on new construction and repair projects at Seaspan Shipyards. Under the direction of the Manager, Naval Architecture; the Senior Engineer, Naval Architecture participates in all phases of new construction design projects including requirements decomposition, design preparations, supporting analysis, material selection and specification, engineering execution, and engineering close-out activities. Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.What You’ll DoProvides engineering and design expertise in assigned areas of Naval Architecture by preparing and reviewing design and calculation packages to ensure contract design requirements are met.Provides engineering and design expertise in assigned areas of structural design by preparing and reviewing design and calculation packages to ensure contract design requirements are met.Supports the Manager, Naval Architecture by providing mentorship and oversight to other junior engineers, designers, or subcontractors in the areas of naval architecture and structural design.Develops and/or reviews design documents for fisheries, icebreaking, and naval replenishment vessels to achieve customer, Classification Society, and regulatory approval.Performs trade studies to decipher the most cost-efficient solutions to engineering problems and meet material budgets for systems assigned. Seeks opportunities to reduce material costs below budget.Develops material specifications and bills of material in accordance with Seaspan material strategies and customer requirements.Represents the company to the industry to develop understanding of Seaspan’s involvement in FFR and continue to build our reputation.What You’ll BringBachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture is required.10 or more years of post-secondary experience working in Naval Architecture and Structural Design.Previous shipyard experience would be an asset.Experience working with a diversely integrated project team is considered an asset.Professional Engineering designation in the Province of British Columbia.Expert knowledge of stability and weight calculations.Expert knowledge of resistance and powering calculations.Knowledge of seakeeping calculations.Expert knowledge of structural design, including detailed knowledge of structural connections and production best practices.Knowledge of the following ship types is considered a strong asset: research vessels, fishing vessels, icebreakers, naval auxiliary vessels.Knowledge of noise predictions and attenuation best practice.Knowledge of icebreaker structures.Ability to work independently to develop solutions to complex technical problems.Strong analytical skills to gather and analyze data and ensure accuracy as part of the analysis process.Strong technical writing skills to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.Knowledge of MRP, purchasing and management systems is a plus.Familiarity with ShipConstructor and ACAD software, document control systems and databases is desired.Good organizational and communication skills (written, verbal, listening and presentation).Availability and readiness to travel as needed to meet business needs.Commitment to a high standard of safety and ability to follow safety policies.Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).Why you’ll love working hereThis is a full-time, permanent position with job stability as Seaspan builds ships for decades to come.Competitive salary in line with experience, plus annual bonus and pension plan matching.Comprehensive health and wellness benefits package, including extended health care, dental, vision, life insurance, medical and parental leave coverage, childcare benefit, a $500 personal spending account, and an Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP).Free on-site gym.Parking included and a complimentary shuttle bus for transit users in North Vancouver.The estimated salary for this position is $119,700 - $146,300.
