AVP, Technical Underwriting, Liability (1 Year Contract) Zurich Canada is seeking an AVP, Technical Underwriting, Liability to provide technical underwriting expertise and guidance to Business Units and Underwriters. This role requires acting independently and as a Subject Matter Expert in all aspects of liability lines, to enable achievement of business plans and excellent customer service. Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, you will steer the Zurich Canada Liability portfolio and collaborate with field underwriting teams. This is a hybrid work opportunity. What You Will Do Operationalize an underwriting business strategy with internal and external stakeholders, using market data to drive decisions. Lead due diligence for liability on all programs and MGA business; develop and conduct training for front-line underwriters. Implement risk appetite changes based on internal and external data. Contribute to the development of technical standards, controls and practices for the line of business or product line. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive underwriting strategies (e.g., pricing) and solutions (e.g., product development, tools and processes). Monitor underwriting strategy execution via performance metrics and insights. Operate under Zurich Risk Policy and Global Underwriting Policy, turning policies into guidance and best practices. Lead initiatives impacting the development of technical underwriting guidelines and best practices. Lead projects with resource alignment and successful outcomes. Provide expert technical underwriting guidance to Business Units Leaders and Underwriters to support business plans and proposition development. Handle complex queries within delegated authority; assist with approval of terms and conditions and LoB-wide issues. Mentor lower-level associates; contribute to business plans and pricing strategy alignment with BU strategies. Lead portfolio management activities, including profitability and growth analysis of specialty areas; recommend changes as needed. Ensure pricing accuracy and drive enhancements to pricing tools in line with Certification requirements. Participate in Technical Underwriting Reviews, identify trends, and contribute to action plans. Engage in regulatory and compliance-related inquiries as needed; develop underwriting training content as SME. Develop and implement long-term plans and budgets for the area of responsibility. Job Qualifications Required Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years of experience in liability underwriting. OR High School Diploma or equivalent and 10+ years of experience in casualty underwriting. Preferred FCIP Advanced knowledge of lines of business and the regulatory environment Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills Compensation and Benefits Starting salary range for this role is $130,000 – $170,000, with compensation varying by location, experience, and other factors.
